Lena Younger is a powerful woman who doesn’t back down. Her power makes me proud to be a female. Even though we have different views on life, I respect her and how she stands up for what she believes in. I identify with her strength and how she does everything she can for the people she loves.

Sunflower by Van Gogh

This painting by Van Gogh represents Lena Younger. It is a physical embodiment of how Mama’s flowers look. The flowers represent her dreams and how they have faded over the years but she holds on to them. This is shown when Mama said, “But Lord, child, you should know all the dreams I had ‘bout buying that house and fixing it up and making me a little garden in the back -(She waits and stops smiling) And didn’t none of it happen.” In the way that she stops smiling while she’s talking you can tell her beautiful dreams are dead like the flowers.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nothing Gold Can Stay by Robert Frost has some parallels to Lena Younger. Much like the painting, it represents her dreams. For example, when the poem says, “So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay.” it is saying that nothing last forever, like Mama’s dreams for the her home. Her dream was gold, like the poem says, but over the years it kept getting duller until eventually it did not exist. This is similar to how the poem says, “Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour.” Mama dreams were beautiful but they didn’t last.

She is close to reaching her dreams and so is the rest of the family. All of the family has their own dreams and the money help them achieve them. Benny wants to be a doctor and Walter wants to own a company. It is a recurring theme in the book, these are just some examples.
