Many folks may know this as previously named Columbus Day. However, indigenous people’s day is about acknowledging the people who already lived on the land “claimed” by others. Further, it makes known the tribes that were uprooted and displaced and honors their history. We must celebrate them and their contributions to make great changes; we cannot mend that which we do not acknowledge as broken.

In the past several decades states, such as Alaska, Hawaii, South Dakota, and Seattle, had moved away from celebrating Columbus. A push for corrective history shinning a light on his treatment of the native peoples along with the fact that you can't "discover" an inhabited led to the shift. Recently it's become a federally recognized holiday though it exists along side Columbus Day rather than instead of.
