Dony (Smartphone Addiction Among College Students), I wanted to challenge my research skills and learn something new.

What were the most addictive drugs? opioids
Can they use methadone while pregnant? yes
Is there a future treatment plan and if so, what is it? buprenorphine
What are the benefits of using the latest treatment? Buprenorphine can be used in clinics instead of a hospital setting so it makes it more available to rural areas.
Dony:
What the biggest challenge in researching this population? Finding peer-reviewed articles specific to the college student.
What was the most effective treatment with this population? CBT and treatment centers, like traditional centers and non-traditional facilities like a summer camp.
What challenges did the college student have when it came to smartphone addiction? Isolative situations and anxiety
Did you find anything like not being able to keep employment or their grades dropping? Yes, for example, their grades would drop from not doing their homework on time or they would lose their job due to calling in sick from not getting enough sleep because they were on their phones all night.
Do you see more of a HARM reduction model or Abstinence in treatment for cell phone addiction? HARM reduction, because try telling college-age students to abstain from their phones.

I found the state of Tennesse will penalize the woman if they find she does heroin while pregnant. She can get 15+ years in prison if found guilty.
Dony:
The different ways to treat this addiction. One example was the summer camps that are available. Kids that are in their senior year can go and get preventative care before they develop the addiction. What was the training?
Sarah went to three different training one on veterans. She wanted to go to the training because her field supervisor hoped Sarah could bring the training back and start up a program at the facility as well as she had a personal interest.
5 Questions
1.) What was the main purpose of the training?
The main purpose was to illustrate the key points of the facility that was conducting the training and explaining the science behind it. It was geared towards veterans.
2.) is there anything you think the class needs to know from the training?
They should know that therapeutic Horseback riding works off Dr. Perry’s neruosequential model and interacts with equine assisted psychotherapy
3.) what kind of research do you think is out there for the veteran population?
Currently there is not too much research because it is fairly new. There is more qualitative over quantitative research.
4.) what was getting into the training like?
Getting into the training was about who you know. Sarah contacted the program and let them know who she was and where she was at school. The person was one of the only people that had written a textbook on EAP.
5.) Would you recommend this training to all students and why?
Sarah would say this training is more geared towards people that want to specialize in working with Veterans.

What Sarah Learned most

Sam - women and sex addiction, interested in working with this population including couples counseling, interest in process addictions
2a Sam - Were most studies relatively new? Most was relatively new, within the last five years or so
2b Sam - Was there a specific age group attached to these studies that was emphasized? There was never a specific age group attached to the studies they just focused on women in general.
2c  Sam - Were co-occuring disorders brought into the studies? Yes, co-occuring disorders were big factors in much of the research, especially with other substances.
2d Sam - Were you able to find studies that contrasted male and female sex addiction? Yes
2e Sam - Were there major differences between male and female sex addiction? Females are more stigmatized but make up more of the sex addiction population than men, women are more focused on attachment than power.
3 Sam - There is a lot of new treatments in development. She didn't think she was going to find anything at first but actually found a lot.
3. Courtney- Learned that children and parents are treated differently either parent is treated or child is treated trying to focus more on the family aspect between child and parent.
1. Courtney- children of parents with SUD, currently works with parents at internship and the struggles they have and wants to work with children in the future
2a  Courtney- How easy was it to research? Difficult at first but after finding articles, found the correct terms to search
2b Courtney- Was the research including both parents and children?  half and half articles included parents but some focused on prior studies.
2c Courtney- Was there abuse to the children with parents with SUD- biggest factor was emotional neglect and child maltreatment
2d Courtney-  Most surprising thing? a lot of mothers use harm reduction by managing how much they use and face stigma by not stopping 
2e Courtney- Was there a gender difference? Most studies focused on mothers and some did both and some did not specify. mothers hold the most stigma.

Kaley: Child abuse among families dealing with substance abuse. Has a lot of DCFS case in her internship and was curious to see if there was a correlations between parents struggling with substance use and child abuse.
2.) Kaley: 
a.Which parent was most likely to abuse the child in the relationship? The one under the influence or the one not? - The parent under the influence because they are so into their substance use that they might not be able to manage their emotions correctly or have time to parent them.
b.How is the environment for these children? - Emotional and physical neglect, high level of conflict, partner instability, disorganization, violence and/or physical and sexual abuse are all common in the  environment for abused children in a home with parents under the influence.
c. What treatments work for this population - Important for the whole family to be involved in the treatment (family therapy). Also important for the parent using to go to individual therapy as well as a substance facility to assist in sobriety.
d. What legal actions are taken in these situations? - Sending these cases to drug court is becoming more popular because of their success rates since they offer more resources than just sending them to jail.
e. What type of research is needed for this population? - Important for further research on preventative care and how to get more government funding for treatment centers.


1.b.) Jenny: Domestic Violence victims struggling with substance use. Does not know much about domestic violence victims, but I was interested to know how the trauma of these situations correlated with their substance use.

a. What types of abuse are considered in domestic violence? Physical, emotional, sexual
What are biases you populational face? Not believed, told to leave relationships
Types of treatment? There isn't a lot that deals with substance abuse and domestic violence.
What is effective? Safety planning for the victim is important
