1) has something bad happen to you turn into something beautiful?
2) I kinda just went for it the more I worked on the more I added to it
3) watercolor and ink and foam board that’s it
4) it started out pretty simple then once I added the foam board it really helped with depth and the color of the flowers really make it pop
It reminds me of my grandmother the flowers do and the bone/skull remind me of hurt and once you get through the hurt beauty comes

1. How can simplicity achieve beauty when looking through the mountain range?
2. I wanted to capture the simple beauty that nature holds. I was very inspired by Tolkien illustrations and how he completed his works
3. I simply used Pencils and a Blending Stick
4. Originally I wanted to focus more on the northern lights and use water colors to get the blend of color they have, but after some complications and a shift of interest I started doing an illustration with clouds drifting through the mountain range.
5. It reminds me of the views I would get when I would go on hikes. I would always feel at peace when I reached the viewpoint and lose myself while gazing across the trees and mountains

1. How can I convey the contrast of a clear mindset against a clouded one?

2.Considering that this as the first piece of the year I didn’t want to spend too much time on the metaphor itself. I went with the idea of a person being unable to see through a glass full of a cloudy liquid while someone else is reaching out to them through a broken glass.

3. I’ve been fond of ink and paints, and with this piece I wanted to use a few different kinds. Namely watercolor and both water based and alcohol-based marker.

4. I was unsure at first, I thought the prompt was too general for me to do much with. But I had a breakthrough when I thought about mixing the idea of the prompt in a physical and metaphorical sense. I started to really have when featuring vases/glass jars into my piece as the physical object to “look through”.

1. How does glass warp the subject behind it.
2. I wanted to experiment more with color. This photo is not finished, but the purple shadows are visible.
3. I used watercolor because I like the texture, how when you use a lot of water there's an outline, and I love how it feels to use.
4. I started off with the intention to use lots of colors and the piece slowly got more and more vibrant.

How can I show the mystery of being underwater?
I wanted to portray the concept of looking through water at the light above. Light filtering through water has always been something I enjoy looking at.
I used acrylic paint because I love how quickly it dries and how it layers.
I painted a few thumbnails of different ideas I was having, but chose this because i liked the composition and how much depth it has.

1. The overall idea for this piece is that the viewer is looking through a portal in a fantasy world that leads to another world—this reality. They’ve travelled down a dark path in the forest and stumbled upon two strangely connected trees that host a portal.
My materials for this were watercolor paper and gouache. I chose gouache because I find it flows easier than others, and doesn’t bleed as much as other watercolors, so I think it’s easier for me. Gouache is much opaquer, which is great for the cartoon-like fantasy I was trying to portray.

2. From the start, I pretty much knew what I wanted: I wanted to paint a character of mine—a young man named Raven—looking through this portal travelling from his fantasy world to our reality.

3. I began sketching out the portal, the trees, and the figure, but I realized that the figure would take too long for me to paint to meet the deadline, so I scrapped part of the idea and painted over it. To keep the painting (slightly) interesting, I painted grass to add depth and reinforce the natural aspect of it.

4. I didn't really have any guiding questions, but I think one would be "how can I portray the other-worldliness of looking into an inter-dimensional portal?" or something like that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

3. “Death will not be an escape” Common fantasy tropes included life and undeath, making you wonder how fragile the concept of living is in a fantasy world and how easily it could be reversed or prevented

Originally the piece was focused on weakness and was going to be a landscape piece that was focused around the breaking down of condition, but after doing posing reference I saw opportunity to pursue something new through a portrait piece with a focus on the person, and as with the layout changing so did the question itself

Process: Finding an idea to commit to was tough, but I started about my exploration of my gender and how I (and how others) would express their own femininity.

Izzy's SI 1: Before the Fall

SI question: How can different wings portray violence versus freedom?

Measurements: 12"x16"

Idea: With this piece, I wanted to portray the feeling of the moment of launching upwards and floating in the air for a moment just before you start to fall. The peace and serenity above the clouds is a place the most people won't be able to see, especially the beauty of a supermoon. The figure is faceless because I wanted to allow interpretation of who the figure could be.

Materials for this piece: Acrylic paint on canvas

Process: I started out with finding references and doing sketches of wings/people with wings trying to get the anatomy correct. Once I was confident, I did a super basic sketch and started painting.

Calisa's SI 1: Antagonizing Agony

1. How can I portray intense emotions through unorthodox color and texture?

3. I wanted to show the panic, fear, and anxiety when I was reminded of a traumatic event. I used bright and odd colors to emphasize the pain felt, and used paper mache to mimic my anxiety and the feeling of being trapped.

4. I used acrylic paint because it has a unique, 3d texture and it can be very bright. I used paper mache to represent how my anxiety makes it feel as if the walls are closing in.

5. I experimented with the concept, sketching different poses, until I found the one that worked the best. I practiced drawing out the sketch before I did it on the canvas. I blocked in the basic colors with paint before adding gradients and texture. Then I balled up newspaper, ripped a bunch of strips, slathered them in glue, and put it on top. After that dried I painted it and stapled it onto the canvas. Finally, I ripped a hole in the top.

God, I hate art in general. I freaking hate it. I'm gonna burn my pieces one day. Ugh.

SI question: "How can I portray sharing your innermost thoughts and deepest insecurities to the dismay of yourself and others?"

Dimensions: 9.125" x 6.5" inches

Idea/Meaning: I wanted to provide a visual that can explain the feeling of overflowing with bottled-up thoughts and feelings. Sometimes people just need to get things out, but it's not the right situation to do so; I know from experience.

Materials: I used gouache and Sharpie on some watercolor paper. I chose Sharpie to get bold, smooth, solid outlines to avoid the gouache bleeding out of the lines. I used gouache for its consistency that allows it to spread like butter (I'm hungry...) while staying bold and opaque.

Process: Well, I created a half-assed edgy sketch and assigned it a random meaning English-teacher-style. I drew before I knew what I wanted to portray, but nobody needed to know that. I grabbed the watercolor paper off of a counter without knowing what it was, plopped down my sketch, outlined it in Sharpie, used the easiest paint possible for the sake of time, and had a full-blown war with blending the background—I won, of course, so... Yippeeeee. 😐

I've officially used up all of my motivation for the rest of the year. 🤷‍♀️

Rhiannon SI 1: Simple Pleasures

1. How would I portray femininity in a simple, everyday activity?

3. I wanted to make the viewer feel a sense of nostalgia towards this piece. I made the eyes very big and dreamy while using colors such as mint and pink to contrast against the majority of brown.

4. I used Alcohol markers, paint markers, micron fine liners, and stickers from my personal sticker collection!

5. At first, the image I had in mind was of a full bust. But as I kept working through the concept, I ended up closing in on the face to further emphasize my idea.

3. My goal was to make a piece that was incredibly bright and fun. So, I referenced Michelangelo's "Birth of Adam" painting. As well as gluing on colorful chain links onto the canvas.
4. I used acrylic paints, paint markers, craft gems, and chain links.
5. I want to be able to improve my realism skills, which is what I attempted in this piece. I various lines coming outward was an idea I had during the painting stage, and I added them so the background wouldn't feel empty.

1. How can I portray intense emotions through unorthodox color and texture

3. I wanted to portray my fear of being sick in an odd way. Inspired by AI generated images, I merged my face together in order to show the panic and uncomfortable feeling when I'm sick. The flowers on the side have meaning; Aspen means fear, fungus disgust, and red columbine symbols anxiety.
4. I used oil paint because I wanted a smooth, easy gradient and color. The icky texture and smell of oil paint is reminiscent of the panic and anxiety of feeling ill.
5. I started off sketching and figuring out what I should do. I stumbled across an image on google that was AI generated and had inspiration. From there, I chose the colors and began painting on the canvas. The right side background was inspired by an artist I saw on TikTok.

3: I wanted to show how scary and confusing losing my memories is. I showed how it feels like I'm losing who I am with this piece.
4: I originally used watercolor, but that ended up just blending together. On this one, I used gouache. It was definitely better, I was able to get the softness of watercolor but also the color and opacity of acrylic.
5: As I said, this is the 2nd one. My first one I scrapped because I wasn't happy with how it looked. After I went back to my sketchbook and reworked some stuff, it turned out a lot better!

1. How can robots portray their treatment as work animals more than assistants

3. The idea was meant to show how modern robotics are making constructs that are more comparable to working animals than their own thing so I decided to give our metallic friend a wild animal as a partner, and what better than a vicious boar in the wild west
4. I used chalk pastels to resemble old western pieces
5. Originally the piece was just going to be a portrait of the bot and boar but that changed into a landscape gradually and I decided it would better portray the "wild" aspect of robots and animals at a basic level
