That kept me very occupied for a long period of the lockdown since I kept experimenting trying to find the perfect sourdough bread recipie. When quarantine started, I was 12 years old, and my family was thinking about having a bar mitzvah for me. After COVID hit, midway through, we started my preparation for it with my dad’s cousin, a Rabbi. She set up zoom lessons, and we started, but there were many times when she canceled on us due to other reasons that were never clarified. She also claimed she would send all these learning materials, but she never did. Then one of the Jewish holidays came up, and we decided to celebrate over zoom with my grandma. With her knowing I was practicing for my bar mitzvah, asked me to recite something, and I had no clue what to say. My grandma became highly angered since these religious ceremonies were vital to her. My grandma eventually called my dad’s cousin, complaining she had taught me nothing, which resulted in my cousin quitting. This may seem like my dad’s cousin is a bad person but in reality my grandma was just extremely harsh. However, everyone was wrong. I remember when the rumor started going around that school would be shut down for only two weeks and then by the end of the day it was. My initial thoughts after this was “Fantastic! No school for two weeks,” but as school was switched to virtual I started thinking could this be around for a longer time. When it started to look like the rest of the year was going to be virtual I thought that is the virus really that bad, could I die if it were to get to me? I believe everyone acted in an appropriate manner, at least in the beginning of the pandemic. Once everyone went into an official lockdown my parents helped me and my sister realize that this could be a good opportunity to spend time with our family and grow as individuals.
