Final Project feedback padlet! (B BLOCK) by Alexander Goldberg

Please use this padlet as a work space to give us a brief write up of what you have so far for the final project! Note: it's expected that your project will not be 100% complete at this point, this is just a space to get your ideas out in a way that your peers can evaluate and give you feedback on. We will break out into pairs after this and you will get a chance to engage in more substantive feedback work with a partner!

I am designing a charter school for students who are academically behind. The goal of the school is to create an environment where students can get a little extra boost. Approximately 12% of students never graduate from high school. These students are statistically more likely to go to jail, or to live under the poverty line. The purpose of this school is to make it so that everyone has the chance to get a high school diploma, no matter what challenges they are facing. The small class environment and personalized education make it so that students can specifically focus on their academic weaknesses in order to catch up. The school curriculum also allows for time learning life skills and addresses reasons why students might be behind such as mental health struggles, learning disabilities, or lack of skills such as time management.

The goal is to create an environment in which prisoners what to grow and improve. To ensure this prisoners will have to apply to apply the the prison (through a lottery style application process). Prisoners will be split into two categories: Level 1 and Level 2. Level 1 prisoners are the newly recruited prisoners, while Level 2 prisoners have been deemed mentally capable to assume the freedom and responsibility given by the prison.

I focused on schools during pandemics because that is something that happens recently. As well, I focus and bring light to problems along with solutions that schools faces during the current COVID 19 pandemic. The goal is to create a fail safe for schools if there is a time where schools have to abruptly go into lockdown or have to adapt to a pandemic. A process that can be implemented before a pandemic so that schools do not have to go through a chaotic process like they did in the past couple of years.

I'm designing a private school without grades. My goal is to create an environment where students can fully focus on the content of the class instead of just doing the work to get an A. Instead, students will be evaluated at the end of each trimester at a public "exhibitions" where students will showcase their work to the public. They'll also receive detailed report cards for each subject where they will receive a Beginning, Developing, Meets, or Exceeds in 8-14 categories (examples of these categories would be mastery of content, participation in class, ability to work through challenges, etc). The school would also be very small with an emphasis on community. Students would be required to participate in a multi-grade Advisory and a Committee. These Committees range in topic (Environmental Action, Social Justice, etc.) but all have the same theme- to improve their community.

I'm designing a medium/large maximum security federal prison. The prison splits prisoners' time equally between education and paid work experience, and most services within the prison like food prep, low-level management, and management of the facilities are done by the prisoners. Some services, like a restaurant, are open to the public. Prisoners start in entry-level jobs and whatever education level they're at, but are quickly given agency to pursue degrees they want or apply for different jobs within the prison. Prisoners are provided with healthcare, counseling, and teaching services, most of which is done by other inmates. If a prisoner adequately engages with the community for the length of their stay and are no longer dangerous, they can have their criminal record cleared.

I am designing a school for recently released juvenile offenders in the US. It would be a charter school that only has a small number of students (30 ish) and would have resources to food, therapy and mental health needs, medical care, and academic help as well as being a school. The main purpose would be to try to help these youth with getting their high school diplomas and continue either into the work force or to high education. Education reduces recidivism rates as well as offers greater access to certain opportunities. Juvenile offenders usually don't earn their high school diploma or GED and end up back in the system. This school is to try to start to change that and address the specific needs of a minor formally incarcerated.

I am designing a school system that values 2-way communication between teachers and students. In the words, rather than teachers lecturing all the time, my school will ask teachers to be collaborators, companions, and listeners to students' thoughts, and possibly encourage students to educate teachers on one aspect of interest once per week. In terms of more concrete reform that our school adopts, we will focus on enhancing the dining experience of students, ensuring them to have a healthy, well-balanced diet (i.e., fresh salad bar, absence of overly salty foods). (Note: a healthy diet does not intrinsically associate itself with more expenses, which can raise the tuition) In addition to the enhanced food quality, my school deeply recognizes the significance of snack breaks. Therefore, we open the dining hall all day long, with hot meal, ensuring students will not get hungry or low-blood-sugar-related-syndrome due to the absence of access to foods.
