Ashley Strickland Task 1: Fluency

Using Discovery Education resources, LMS created a Reader's Theater in which 1st grade students practiced short u sound words. Using the poem, Muddy Rubber Ducky, LMS divided the lines among boys, girls, and everyone. Students practiced reading the poem with the assigned lines both practicing short u sound words, as well as reading fluently. They started practicing this in the media center and continued in their classroom. During the following week's lesson, I brought up the poem and could tell the students had practiced and was improving their fluency.

Melissa Henry Task 1: Fluency

Students in Mrs. Henry's class use songs from the Music Textbook for fluency practice. On the first day, the students work with their group on accuracy by decode words. On the second day, the students work with their partner on automaticity. The third day, students work with their partners on rhyme and expression. The forth day is used for perfecting the song. Finally, on the fifith day, students record themselves reading/ sing the song.

Melissa Henry Task 2: Vocabulary

Using the Discover Education SOS, Vocabulary Scavenger Hunt, Mrs. Henry introduces the vocabulary words for the week. On day one, the teacher provides a list of words for the students to listen for while watching a video, video clip, or listening to text. When students hear the word they are listening for they clap. The teacher then stops and discusses the meaning of the word using context clues from the video or text. On day two, students work with partner to determine and write down the meaning for a chosen word. On day three, students create an entry for their Discovery Education board builder "Vocabulary boards". Students provide a meaning, a sentences, and some sort of illustration of the word, either a video clip or image. Students continue to add to their vocabulary boards during the quarter as they learn new words.

Vocabulary: Veteran's Day

Using a Discovery Education video on Veteran's Day, I planned my lesson for my kindergarten classes. We discussed what a Veteran is. I allowed them to give me their guesses. During the video, I paused it throughout to explain what monuments they were looking at and whom they honored. I asked them did they have anyone in their family that served in the military. Afterward they were able to tell me what a veteran was as well as the different branches of the military.

Ms. Strickland- Adding numbers with 1st Grade

First grade students are learning about adding and subtracting numbers up to 20. We viewed the Discovery Education video Math Monsters: Counting and Symbolizing. During the video, it discussed different ways to represent an addition sentence while counting fish in a pet store. After viewing the video, students received the handout, a number generator, and crayons to create a fish bowl of fish using the number the received from their number generator. Students drew their fish, wrote their addition sentence, and discussed how they got their answers.

4th grade students used "Calling all Characters!" handout to create a smart phone contact list, text messages, missed call and apps that their coincided with the Black History Report.
