In this lecture we were introduced to the idea of the Made2Move club. This is a club that aims to promote physical activity in a non-competitive on-campus to begin with, with hopes of the club expanding further. We were split into our pod groups, in my group was Oran, Tom, Donncha and Colm. The club officers were introduced to us. They are Ciara, Pádraig, Alex and Cian. Gillian and Fiona then prepared us for the first Made2Move session. We were shown how to operate the screening system. We will be required to take the mentees weight, height, and waist and him measurements, along with a sit and reach test and push-up and sit-up progressions.

In this lecture we were given the club’s social media links on twitter and facebook in order to promote the club on our own profiles. We discussed where improvements could be made to the questionnaires the mentees had to fill out and to the organisation of the screening in general. As a class it was decided that there may have been too many questonnaires and that they needed to be condensed.

Roles were divided amongst our pod group. My role for our pod session(tonight) was to take attendance. We discussed what activities we could do for our session and made a session plan.

Gillian gave us fitness programme suggestions for our mentees and different ideas to promote physical activity we discussed.

This lecture was led by Wesley and took place in the Mardyke Arena. He taught us creative ways to interact with our mentees. He asked us to think about the individual themselves and ways to encourage them and keep them interested and happy. He said that positive affirmations are incredibly important throughout the sessions. He told us that warm-ups should be done dynamically not exceeding a moderate intensity. He told us that we should always incorporate an object of some sort such as a beanbag to add a challenge. The end of a class should always include feedback and encouragement.

These were to be the new mentees for anyone that had not received a mentee previously. I helped with the screening as there were some absentees from our class. The mentee I helped screen was Rory Craig who is very active. We were informed at the end of class that the Made2Move classes have been moved to the Mardyke which is a better venue with more space for activities.

This week, we had a practical class with Wesley. This session involved an introduction to resistance training and incorporating it into a training program. Wesley went through progressions and regressions of every exercise and he focused on exercising the 8 main muscle groups of the body. These exercises involved bodyweight movements and movements using light weights. He was showing us these exercises with the intention of us using them with our mentees, progressing or regressing the exercises based on the mentee’s ability and previous experience. To finish the session, we discussed the Made2Move club, how it was going, its strengths and weaknesses and where we could improve.

At the first Made2Move session, we assembled in the Electrical Engineering building. This was a screening session. I received my mentee, Jane (pseudonym). Jane is an Erasmus student from Germany. She wanted to join the club to be active and to meet other people. After greeting her I sat down with her to fill out several forms and questionnaires. When all forms were completed we then did the physical assessment. This made Jane somewhat uncomfortable, but she agreed to it nevertheless.

After 9 mentees had arrived we began the class with a fun warm-up which involved mentees getting into pairs to perform stretches and pulse raising activities.

We then began the circuit. For the first round we did 30seconds activity 30 seconds rest and then move onto the next activity. For the second round, we increased the activity time and reduced the resting time as we felt it appropriate to increase the intensity. To finish the class we did a short cool down. The mentees seemed content with the session and seemed enjoy the activities.

I found this particularly useful as I felt more confident on how to use the various machines afterwards. I had hoped to put this into practice with my mentee. Following this gym induction, we went to the outdoor running track to do the mile challenge. Having completed this, we joined Gillian in the hall for a lesson on resistance training using bodyweight exercises.

The answers were all stuck up on the board and the answers which appeared most frequently were discussed and used to figure out the problem areas and positive areas and what to do to solve the problem areas.

Jane joined the Made2Move club as she did not know many people and she was eager to make new friends. However, Jane also admitted that was very physically inactive and she wanted to get fit again. Jane hated PE in school back in Germany and so it had a negative, domino effect on her levels of physical activity outside of school too.
After making Jane a physical activity programme I was unhappy with her commitment to it in the first two weeks so I decided to tweak it. Jane decided to join the mountaineering club which would involve her in full day of hill-walking every Sunday. She attended the Made2Move classes very regularly and after she settled into things, her levels of PA increased enormously. She said she could feel herself getting fitter in the gym each week which was great to hear. I carried on with motivating her and offering her words of encouragement but she rarely needed it as she was so self-motivated.
Jane seemed very happy with the club at the end of semester 1 before she returned to Germany.

The Made2Move club experienced highs and lows throughout the year. With disappointing days when very little or nobody showed up to pod sessions, when our mentees were not as active as we would have liked, when the maths science students were blindsided and scared away from the club to name but a few. However, there was a shift in the club when it was decided to ditch the weekly classes and just count daily steps of the mentee, either our previous mentee or someone we knew already, eliminating social distance. Guest speakers were brought in and it was great to see towards the end of the semester, a large turnout for the 5k run around the Lough.
