There is a nugget in James' book that describes the New York Giants devising a defensive play specifically with Jackie Robinson in mind. He was so aggressive on the bases that they plotted to trap him. Standard practice back then was for either the shortstop or second baseman to go into the outfield for a cutoff throw when a batter smacked what was likely an extra-base hit. The other infielder would go to the second-base bag.

But Robinson was always looking to snag an extra base, so he'd usually take a wide turn around second. The Giants' plan was to send both middle infielders into the outfield to perhaps make Robinson feel even more brazen. Then the first baseman would trail Robinson to second, ready for a throw from the outfield to catch him off second if he returned.
