The conflict of Trust vs. Mistrust takes place during the child's infancy up until approximately 18 months. A child needs affectionate and reliable care to resolve to trust. In the text it states that "infants gain a sense of trust, or confidence, that the world is good." Mistrust could resolve when an infant is neglected. As a result, an infant may withdraw from the world around them.
I believe I resolved this conflict with a sense of mistrust. I was a withdrawn child growing up, and hated being touched/hugged for any reason.

Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt is a conflict resolved in the early childhood stages of life (2-3 years). A child during this stage needs "suitable guidance and reasonable choices" as stated in the text. During this conflict, a child begins asserting their independence and building their sense of autonomy. If a child is in an over or under-controlling environment, it could lead to their sense of shame and self-doubt of their own abilities. The text also states that a child who feels shame and doubt "doubts his ability to control impulses and act competently on his own".
My own resolution of this conflict was autonomy. I was able to foster my own independence at a young age and was confident in my own abilities to complete tasks on my own. I also was able to control my impulses successfully.

Initiative vs. Guilt

During the conflict of Initiative vs. Guilt, taking place around the preschool years (3-5 years), children need to foster their sense of purpose by having some control over their environment. For example, children at this stage should be able to gain control over the friends they play with and the activities they can direct. When these efforts are stifled by caregivers, this "causes children to feel too much guilt because they have been threatened, criticized, and punished excessively by adults" as stated in the text.
In my own resolution of this conflict, I believe I emerged with a feeling of guilt. This may have been due to the fact that I was overly independent and attempted to control too much of my own environment. This led to caregivers stifling my assertion of power and resulted with an ongoing feeling of guilt throughout childhood. I had a very strict conscience that left me with overwhelming feelings of guilt any time I knew I was in the wrong.

Industry vs. Inferiority is the conflict in which children develop their sense of competency academically and socially. Beginning in middle childhood (6-11 years), children begin to foster their abilities in school and social settings. As stated on page 321 of the text, "Erikson's sense of industry combines several developments of middle childhood: a positive but realistic self-concept, pride in accomplishment, moral responsibility, and cooperative participation with agemates." Children could resolve this conflict with a feeling of inferiority or inadequacy if they struggle to excel at school or lack encouragement from caregivers.
I resolved this conflict with a sense of industry. I was good at school and felt it came naturally to me. Although I was still a shy, withdrawn child, I played sports and had a few close friends to interact with. As I succeeded in school and gained some friends, my self-confidence began to gradually increase despite my prior struggles.

Identity vs. Role Confusion

Throughout adolescence (12-18 years) children face Erikson's Identity vs. Role Confusion conflict. As described in the text on page 398, "Constructing an identity involves defining who you are, what you value, and the directions you choose to pursue in life." Teens can foster a strong sense of identity by being able to try new things and having choices. Teens in this stage need to be able to explore their values and relationships in order to find where they fit in. Encouraging teens to try new things, especially things that correspond to their interests will help them find their place. If teens are discouraged in their exploration and beliefs, they could develop a weak sense of self and no sense of direction.
At this age, I developed role confusion. I had some form of identity, however, I failed to find a place to fit in. As a result, I did not have a plan for the future and did not value my relationships. I was very shallow as a teen and had no idea where my life was headed. I knew I could be successful academically at college, however, with no direction or goals, I dropped out. It was not until young adulthood was I able to form my strong sense of identity.

The Intimacy vs. Isolation conflict takes place during early adulthood (19-40 years). During this time, young adults are challenged to make close, intimate relationships with others. A successful development of intimacy will result in close bonds, meaningful connections, and strong relationships. However, some young adults struggle to be successful in this conflict. The text states on page 10, "because of earlier disappointments, some individuals cannot form close bonds and remain isolated."
I believe I will resolved this conflict with a positive development of intimacy. Although I struggled to resolve my strong sense of identity, I feel as though I have gotten back on track to develop strong relationships. During my early adulthood I was able to resolve a strong sense of identity and began finding a purposeful direction. In doing so, I believe I began building strong relationships and bonds with others.

Generativity vs. Stagnation

During middle adulthood (40-65 years) an individual will face Erikson's conflict of Generativity vs. Stagnation. The text defines generativity as "giving to the next generation through child rearing, caring for others, or productive work". A successful resolution of generativity will be someone who forms a close bond with family relationships and/or contributes to society in a positive way. Stagnation during this stage will result in feelings of unfulfillment. Stagnation can occur in individuals who fail to develop strong, positive relationships, fail to contribute positively to society, or fail to improve oneself in an effort to accomplish goals.
I hope to see my own result as a positive development of generativity. I am just beginning my journey to build a close family, but have already began to contribute to society. I am successful so far in my career and am an active participant in my community.

When an individual reaches old age (65+ years) they will face Erikson's conflict of Integrity vs. Despair. Page 10 of our text states "integrity results from feeling that life was worth living as it happened". A person who resolves with integrity will reflect on their life with an acceptance of their end of life. Despair will result from feelings of regret. As a result, an individual will be bitter and resentful at the end of life.
I hope to develop a sense of integrity and sense of fulfillment at the end of life. I continue to try to build lasting relationships to establish my sense of purpose. I believe resolving with a sense of intimacy and generativity in previous conflicts will put an individual on a path to integrity at the end of life. As I progress through these conflicts, I hope to resolve positively so that I may end my life with a sense of integrity.
