When I first started this program, I didn’t understand how deeply affected First Nation’s people were by the social work profession. I had a basic understanding of residential schools and the 60’s scoop but I didn’t know how complex and deep the scars were that were inflicted on Indigenous people at the hands of the social work profession

Group work was difficult but it gave me the opportunity to share experiences, opinions and beliefs and learn from my classmates. Group work is important in social work because we collaborate and network with other organizations and programs often. It is also important for advocacy, as a profession in order to make social change.

5 faces of oppression

“For every oppressed group, there is a group that is privileged in relation to that group” (Young, 2011)

Exploitation – Who works for who? Who does what? Who is paid for what?)

Marginalization – Marginalization is a process of exclusion. Pushing people to the outside of society, this is when society wont or believes it cant use people for labor.

“Marginals are people the system of labor cannot or will not use.” (Young, 2011)

Powerlessness-

Professionals are privileged in relation to nonprofessional’s, by virtue of their position in the division of labor and the status it carries. nonprofessional’s suffer a form of oppression in addition to exploitation, which I call powerlessness.” (Young, 2011)

Cultural Imperialism- Dominant cultures set the normal for what all cultures should look like

Violence- Police Brutality happens more to minority groups ,etc

In conclusion, this course has educated me on the historical context of systemic oppression faced by the First Nation’s people in Canada. As mentioned previously, it is important for social workers to recognize the ongoing struggles of injustice that the First Nation’s people are still faced with. Much of this oppression was perpetuated by the social work profession. I also understand the importance of recognizing the land where my feet are planted and respecting First Nation’s inherent rights to the land and self governance. I also recognize that decolonization and reconciliation within the social work profession is an ongoing process that requires commitment and participation, with many different individuals working together towards a common goal. I also recognize that I am a treaty person and I have personal responsibility to the treaties, as I live and am situated on First Nation’s territory. As an emerging social worker with this new knowledge, it is my personal pledge to stand up against racism, discrimination, systemic oppression, and stereotypes that have contributed to acts of harm against out First Nation’s people in Canada.

Alison's research explores the experiences of women and non-binary sex workers in Calgary, Alberta, focusing on their needs and desires related to the places where they work. Current research shows that sex workers often face discrimination and marginalization based on where they work, and Canadian laws make certain spaces off-limits for sex work. The research aims to fill this gap by asking: How do sex workers experience and feel about their work environments, and how can these experiences inform the design of supportive workspaces?
