Imagine having a tray filled with pretzels, fruit slices or veggies sitting in the corner of every classroom in our district. When I taught in a multi-age classroom years ago, we provided carrot sticks for our students every day. Families took turns providing them on a rotating basis. It was a rather affluent community, so this worked well. I am not so sure I see it being so successful here. "Sleep research in recent years has shown that adolescents do better when allowed to follow their natural circadian rhythms of sleeping later and staying up later." I wonder if the district has ever considered a staggered start time that would allow our middle school and high school students to start their school day an hour later. Knowing that many of our district decisions are made in honor of budgetary concerns, I am not optimistic that something like this would ever become a reality. This is important to remember because we could easily fault our children for reverting back to an earlier developmental stage.  Why? Why?  How come? The good old days of class plays and reader's theater.  Where have they gone?  Why have the disappeared?  The 10 year olds would love us to reconsider.
