Emmanuel College
Emmanuel College was founded in 1911, being Australia’s 9th Residential college and one of St Lucia’s first. It was founded by the Presbyterian Church of Queensland, and students first resided in Wickham Terrace. Emmanuel was an all-male college until 1975 when women were allowed to reside there. Further changes included moving Emmanuel from Wickham Terrace to on UQ’s Main Campus in St Lucia in 1955.

Union College
Union College has become a significant part of UQ’s and St Lucia’s modern development. Well-known architect James Birrell designed Union College in 1963. Although first opened in inner Brisbane, Union moved to its St Lucia sight in 1965 and buildings were finished by 1974. Union College is the only college to be heritage listed for its cultural, social and architectural significance, identifying its significance to this week’s topic.

International House
International house was a project introduced by Rotarian Bert Martin, as he believed that both local and international students could benefit from sharing university life with each other. IH opened in 1963, and by 1964 59 male students were selected to take up residence. In 1969 the ‘girls block’ was opened allowing women to reside at the college. IH is valued for its multicultural and coeducational attitudes, and seen as an attractive alternative to the other residential colleges.

Cromwell College
Cromwell was one of the first colleges affiliated with the University of Queensland, after its opening in St Lucia in 1954. It began as a male only college but then moved to a co-educational college in 1973. Cromwell got its name in honour of Oliver Cromwell, sometime Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland.

Duchesne College
Duchesne College was founded in 1937 as the direct wish of His Grace Archbishop Duhig, to provide safe housing for women. Its first site was in New Farm until it made its residence in St Lucia in 1959. The name Duchesne means ‘of the oak’, inspiring the college oath of ‘Strength in the Light of Truth’.

This place was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 21 October 1992. The house is significant for its timberwork, showing the Lahey family’s involvement in the timber industry in south east Queensland which demonstrated history of Queensland. Moreover, the clear finished timber is very outstanding and in its quality since construction in 1920.

◊ Vida Lahey’s house was initially built for Romeo Lahey (the brother) above Canungra, on a spur of the Darlington Range before it was moved to Canungra township on the hill by David Lahey and his wife (the parents).

“The most striking objects now unearthed are no longer the tools of agriculture and the chase, and other products of domestic industry… but… As monuments we have instead of huts and farmhouses monumental tombs, temples, palaces, and workshops. And in these we find a manner of exotic substances, not as rarities, but regularly imported and used in everyday life,” (Flanagan p.34)

We no longer come to St. Lucia for the agriculture and food, but we expect more than that. Food has become secondary, and people have noticed that culture and creation is almost necessary in a place we inhabit. It keeps us human. UQ to me is a place to discover more of every day. I haven’t seen the whole campus yet, but with all of the lakes, and buildings, and places to learn, I see it as more of a story rather than a necessity.
