These images are ones that I made up on Photoshop and it focuses on human trafficking.

With some of the research that I have done, I read that some of the targets of human trafficking are women. In specifics, women in rural areas, foreigners and sadly even children.

I made this image based on a child that is sort of a form of currency representative of human traficking. There are some images that surround the child, like building structures, and a straw-like texture. The building is to represent that these victims are being pushed into these metropolitan areas against their will and the straw hat texture is to symbolize these people being ripped away from their rural communities to work.

We chose to focus more on the cultural and social norms of South African woman but as we each did our research and designs I've realized that our designs highlight gender inequality. So now our goal is to express their diverse culture while also showing their challenges physically and emotionally in a gender-based society.

Group 7 Layout Ideas: We were aiming to find a way to depict the issues that women face, and possibly a way of empowering women through a design. Dludu Clinton's sketches which consist of the first three are powerful depictions that women will find difficulties in their lives in a corporate environment. Personally, I feel like that this is the direction to go in as it's a design that feels current with the current society and it is something that will help a viewer, even a viewer that may not feel like this issue affects them. One thing we are debating is whether the idea is visually descriptive enough, and how these visuals will fit in a composition.

Our focus for the COIL project is to illustrate the illusory nature of the feminine appearance.

We have taken influence from artists like Gio Swaby, Kara Walker, and Tonyin Odutala in presenting women in silhouette with overlying patterns and prints.

The first layout takes inspiration from all three of these artists. The viewer is put in the perspective of a person casting a preconceived notion onto a woman and as a result have a flat, 2D image of her person.

“Work-life balance for women,” I delved into the multifaceted nature of the issue and explored creative ways to visually represent it in the poster titled “The Balancing Act”. We discussed how women often juggle multiple responsibilities, from professional obligations to family care, and the challenge of maintaining self-care amidst these pressures. The concept of balance emerged as central to my theme, symbolising the constant effort women make to find harmony in their lives.

My visual idea centers around a greyish background to convey the neutrality and seriousness of the topic, while incorporating pink and blue elements that stand out, representing the feminine and dynamic aspects of women’s lives. The contrasting colors also signify the tension between different roles and the need for equilibrium. We felt this approach would effectively communicate the struggle and emphasize the importance of prioritizing self-care as part of achieving balance.

Her Knowledge, Her Freedom: The first concept is based off my driving statement "knowledge is freedom". It shows the gesture of passing a book from one person to another. Just as the woman receives the book, her shackles begin to fall off. I wanted to promote the idea that education liberates and empowers people, and it takes other women with the knowledge to share what they know to others.

Quench Her Mind: This concept shows a bust of a woman with her mind appearing like a growing bush. The text above her drips like water, and vines shoot from her mind. This concept was meant to be a direct message to women to encourage them to never stop pursuing knowledge and knowing more. It's a beautiful endeavor to learn and grow in wisdom and understanding.

No Wall Too High: This final concept shows a monochromatic environment with women behind the wall and barbed wire. On the side facing the viewer is a girl standing on a stack of books to reach over and give a book to one of the women on the other side. It's meant to express the oppression that women experience and how education and the help of other women can overcome even the highest of walls. This is the concept that I will be moving forward with for my final work.
