I wonder what Brian will do in the forest , I think he should find a place to stay for the night . That is a good idea because if he has shelter ,and if it rains he has cover . Also, if he knows how to start a fire , by rubbing a stick between his hands on another piece of wood , he would be able to create smoke signals so he could be found ,and he will also have warmth if he does that.

Maybe his wife left or died.

I totally agree with you Logan because in the book it says that the pilot was about 40 years old and you can say that's kind of old and it's likely to have a heart attack if you have heart problems near that age. I also think I know another reason he could have a heart attack. It says that he is flying a very small plane at 6,000 feet high. Low oxygen levels and air pressure could be a factor.

I think Brian's experience on the bushplane is similar to what he's experiencing with his parents' divorce. His family as he knows it is being torn apart, leaving him with two choices. He can either give up, or he can deal with his new life and move on. On the plane, when the pilot suffers a heart attack and dies, Brian is left with the same choices. He can either fly the plane until it runs out of fuel and crashes (give up), or he can try his strategy to nose dive first then "pull back on the wheel slightly until the nose comes up" until the plane eventually loses altitude and lands (deal with the situation). Maybe the pilot dying is symbolic of his family divorcing.

I agree, Andrew, because Brian could use the hatchet that his mother gave him to chop down trees and build a shelter and create a fire. I think his mother gave him the hatchet just in case of an emergency such as this. Also, the gift of the hatchet might also symbolize the protection his mother wants to arm him with as he makes his way through life. I have a feeling the hatchet will come in handy in the chapters to come.

First i have to say this book is really good it has a lot of action. One part of the book i thought was cool is when he was trying to figure out the control because the plane desanding and was going to crash. And the pilot had a heart attack.Brian was worryed and he started to cry but then he saw a headset and he tryed to talk to see if anyone is on the otherside. He didin't here anyone intile he fliped a shich. He herd somebody on the other side but it was very staticky then he lost transmisson but brian knew he had to stay stong. Then he thought if there a clearing and he slows down and head for the ground it wont be such as bad as and inpect but there were now clearings so he headed for the lake

My thought is that if Brian`s plane jerked right before it cashed, then he should move left so he`s back in the flight path of the plane. He should leave a trail to get back to the crash site for water too. Brian should also use his hatchet to chop wood, from trees, so he can build a shelter about 7 or 8 feet off the ground so he can`t get eaten by bears or wolves since wolves and bears are shorter than that. I also think he should try to stay in the same spot after moving left because if he keeps moving he might go onto a spot that the search party already checked, and they might not check it again which lowers the chance of Brian being found.

I think that Brian is starting to realize that real life isn't as easy as the heroes in movies make it look. For example: easily walking away from a plane crash, finding fresh water, starting a fire, getting food, and building a shelter. If I were him I would have started gathering wood even if my body felt like it was going to fall apart, because I wouldn't want to spend that night out in the cold. I also think he's probably shocked and surprised about what happened. (Where am I? Am I in heaven?)

Another reason I think he shouldn't have ``shoved it down his throat `` is because his stomach has contrasted or shrunk since he hasn't eaten any thing since he boarded the plain about 2 or 3 days ago, and if you eat a lot of food really fast when your stomach is like that your stomach can't hold it in [you know what that means]. It is good that Brian found other berries other than the gut cherries, raspberries because he has other food that isn't as hard to eat. It was funny that Brian found out how to start a fire using his hatchet by accident, If that porky pine did not come in Brian's shelter he wouldn't have warmth, he wouldn't be able to cook food or send smoke signals, like what I said in one of my first coments.

To start off, if it wasn't for that porcupine, which I thought was a very painful discovery, he never would have figured out how to start a fire. And if he didn't have that 20 dollar bill, he never even would have had a fire. I felt the same way about the gut cherries and the raspberries. If he didn't discover the raspberry bush, he'd be stuck with the gut cherries. I also got a little nervous when he confronted the bear, but that ended up okay, too.

It took him a wile to figure out light refraction ,so he shot under a fish and got his first meat.

I think some of the things Brian has to deal with might make him go crazy. Things like: trying to get the attention of a rescue plane, struggling to find food, figuring out how to spear fish, and knowing the right time to start the signal fire. I also think he is starting to see things differently. Now, when he sees a bird, he sees the whole bird. He knows the feathers, he knows the sound it makes, he sees the colors. These are things he didn't see when he lived in the city. Being alone is making him more aware of his surroundings. I also think he's becoming more independent in his work since he lived with his parents.

I think it was good that Brian found another food scorce of food other than berries because he might get sick from eating too many berries. It was also a good idea to start hunting the ``foolbirds`` since they are annoying and they are a good scorce of meat, getting rid of the foolbirds means less destraction and more food. Saying ``hey get out of here!`` to a skunk was a really bad idea because if you do that a skunk will think you are trying to hurt it and it will defend its self by spraying ``the stink spray``. I don`t know how Brian forgot about light refraction[ the bending of light] he must have not done well in science in school.I can now see that Brian is starting to go crazy since he decided to yell at a skunk, cut himself with his hatchet and nodded to passing wolves.

I agree and disagree at the same time because Brian was probably distracted from everything that's going on in the wilderness to think about light refraction. Also, he never would have forgotten about it if he was in Mr. Figueroa's class.

I think it was good and bad that the tornado hit because it gave him a chance to restart and erase all the mistakes that he made and it got rid of that moose. But I think the best thing the tornado did was that it fliped the plane over so that the tale stuck out of the water if the tornado didn't happen then he wouldn't be found since the safety pack was in the plane, I had the same idea that Brian had when he first saw the plane, get the safety pack it could have supplied him with all the materals that he would need to survive for a year! The bad thing the tornado did was that it injured him to the point that he had troble chopping wood. If only he found the pack earlier he would have been found almost right when he crash! When Brian was cutting the tail of the plane open and dropped his Hatchet it showed that Brian was still just the clumsy 13 year old city kid. I enjoyed this book so much! Thank you Mr.Fig for putting us in this group with this amazing book. :-)

I thought these last few pages were great. I can't believe there was a moose attack and TORNADO! At that point, I would have run as fast as possible. I also don't blame him for going a bit crazy (he was turning into old Brian). But if it was me, I wouldn't know what to do with myself, no one to talk to, starving (which ends soon), dealing with natural disaster. I would go insane. But he didn't. In fact, he dealt with the situation better than he would have that first week he was stranded. Like towns that get destroyed by tornados, Brian rebuilt everything he had bigger, better, and stronger. I think when he was rescued, he was happy and sad. Happy because it's what he wanted all along. Sad because he would never really get the chance to use his bag of treasures.

He would have used the sleeping bag and never learned how to make fire to keep warm. And if he had the emergency transmittor earlier, the timing of the rescue plane would not have been the same. If he hadn't learned survival skills, he would have stayed a city boy.
