A speech/language impairment is a communication disorder that effects a persons ability to communicate and effect there educational performance. The impairment can effect a persons language, where people have trouble expressing there needs/ideas. One of the verbal impartments is stuttering. It can also effect a persona fluency with language. Also some people could have a lisp.

Some people with these impairments have trouble with fluency. The flow of the persons speech could be very fast or slower the someone without the impairment. Some things that come with this are a stutter, or a lisp. Another thing people with these impairments have is the sound of there voice. The person could have problem of a raspy, or harsh voice. The pitch of there voice could also be very low so it could be hard to understand. The language is also something that is effected by a speech impairment. This could men the improper use of words, inability to express ideas and reduced vocabulary.

Causes

Some causes of the Impairment is hearing loss, neurological disorders, brain injury, intellectual disabilities, drug abuse and, physical impairments like a cleft lip of palate.

Treatment/Interventions

Some things that help students with these impairments are speech therapy which would help them with pronunciation and understanding words. The speech-language pathologist or SLP would help the student with rhyming words that could be hard for students with stutters of lisps. They could also use hands on recourses to help the students recognize the words that they are using. A way I would work with a student with a impairment is take time to learn about the students impairment to see if it was serious enough to call the parents and inform them about the speech of the student. I would also speak very clearly in class to make sure they can get all the information that they can. A resource I can use are the students IEP to see if they can work with an other teacher that can teach them much slower so they can understand the material. A challenge I would face is the speed of teaching they could need to the speed the class without the impairments could need. A strength the student with impairment could bring is the class moving at a slower speed it could help many kids get good marks on there exams because we are moving slower.
