"What-Went-Well" Exercise

A common theme we find throughout Flourish is the ability to "create" our own happiness. I enjoyed this exercise in particular because of the small implications we may fail to initially recognize.
1. You are physically writing down the good things about your day. These are tangible representations of our thoughts that we can physically see, not just a concept or idea stuck in our heads. They are right in front of us, and are there for us to revisit at a later date.
2. You are able to recognize the varying degrees of positivity in your daily life. The things that bring us happiness will not always be these gradiose, thoughtful events or gestures. Sometimes it is the small things that make all the difference. By forcing ourselves to recognize three elements that "went well" each day, we learn to identify these small victories.

Using Positive Psychology to Combat Student Depression

As noted in Flourish, the concepts currently being taught in schools promote success in the adult workplace. Skills are (perhaps unknowingly) prioritized over well-being, which very likely contributes to the increase in student depression. This TED Talk delves into a student's perspective of this situation, highlighting the importance of Positive Psychology in relation to this growing problem.

Angela Duckworth wrote Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, and discussed the power of grit on success. When coupled with PERMA and positive psychology, I think that these two concepts are closely
related. By staying positive and taking things in stride, you build on your resiliency and tenacity when you really need to power to push through hard times and bounce back from setbacks.

This is another exercise that was discussed in Flourish. This works well with both children and adults. This is a fairly easy exercise where an kind act is performed for an individual without anything in return. Like the video states, this is already a trait we possess, we just need to think of others, and in reality, there is a return on this act through the goodness you feel in yourself.

One of the take aways I had from Flourish was that the path to transformation can be done very simply. Martin Seligman gave a couple of examples that are very simple, but can really change the leans through which we view reality to progress to a happier life.
