In the year 1819 Missouri requested to become a part of the Union as a slave state. This created a problem with an imbalance in the free state to slave state ratio. Henry Clay contributed into the matter and suggested they allow half of Missouri to be a slave state and admit Maine as a free state to keep the balance. Northerners represented by Senator Rufus King said that Congress held power to prohibit slavery in states while the South, represented by Senator William Pinkney, argued new states had the same rights as the original 13 and could choose themselves. This Compromise was a temporary solution that showed the splitting views on state powers and slavery in the North and South.

Denmark Vesey was an African American leader from Charleston, SC who bought his own freedom. In June 1819 Vesey planned an uprising with many of his slave followers to surround and loot a Charleston arsenal and then sail to Haiti. It was given away by 2 slaves, George Wilson and Joe LaRoche. The plan was stopped by federal and state troops. It showed the growing empowerment of slaves and their will to rebel against the state. It also caused people to think about states rights and Federal Government power

The Nullification Doctrine, established by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison that where the sates were able to determine whether the Federal Government overstepped its boundaries. John C. Calhoun furthered the doctrine by writing about South Carolina's protests against the Tariff of 1828. The South then adopted the Ordinance of Nullification that declared the Tariffs of 1828 and 1832 had no affect on the state or it's people. In 1832 Jackson announced his "Proclamation to the People of South Carolina" which allowed federal government supremacy. This made the South angry and want more to have more power to the state. Jackson's Proclamation was well received by the north which caused a further divide in the North and South.

It was suppressed by state militia. It caused many slaves to be put on trial and killed. It also caused stricter slave codes which caused Abolitionists to start arguing against slavery. The stricter slave codes called for no person to educated slaves which many people went against The split was becoming more and more prominent as the South fought for more restrictions against slaves and the North fought more for the freeing of slaves.

War fought from October 1835 to April 1836 for Texas' independence from Mexico. In 1830 the Mexican Government stopped settlement because of the influx in American immigrant and they reimposed the suspended tariff which caused an uprising. The Mexican Government had become very centralized which caused disagreement. The Texan's wanted full independence and after a series of uprisings in March 1836 they declared independence as the Republic of Texas. Santa Anna vowed to take Texas back and Jose De Urrea led many attacks on the Texans. After vigorous training of the Texas military they led a surprise attack on Santa Anna who surrendered and the Mexican Government agreed to view them as the Republic of Texas from then on. This revolution led directly to the Mexican-American war in which the spread of slavery became a large topic of debate

From 1846-1848 the first US conflict to be fought mostly on foreign soil. Originally the US didn't want to accept Texas because t would be a slave state but Polk in 1844 began to "Re-annex" Texas into the US. Polk also had his eyes on California and New Mexico, and when his offer to buy was declined he moved troops into the disputed territory. After the first attack on the US troops, Congress declared war. Mexico lost a significant amount of land to the US so the called up Santa Anna for help. Santa Anna convinced Polk he could end the war if allowed into Mexico. Once in Mexico he took control of the military and attacked the US troops (led by Winfield Scott).
Finally, on Feb. 2, 1848, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed it established that the Rio Grande was the Mexican-American border and Mexico agreed to sell California and New Mexico to the US. This caused conflict in America to have much new land spreading westward and whether or not there should be slavery. The north didn't want to add more slave states while the south wanted more slave states to have more power in the government.

David Wilmot was a Democratic Congressman proposed the Proviso which passed the senate but was rejected by the house. Later Preston King reintroduced the proviso and expanded it to not only the new territories but also any newly acquired territory in the future. But every time it still failed. This further spurred the debate over slavery and it's expansion. More and more the South saw the North try to keep it's power within the government by keeping slaves states to a minimum.

Proposed by Henry Clay in order to try and resolve some of the rising slave problems. The issue was the debate on free and slave states. Zachary Taylor who was elected in 1848 opposed any legislative plan that would upset either North r South but once Filmore was elected he encouraged Henry Clay to continue with his compromise. The compromise admitted California as a free sate and put New mexico and Utah up to popular sovereignty. And Congress passed a new and stronger Fugitive Slave Law to take the returning of slaves out of the states hands and give the federal government responsibility.this led to the demand that Kansas have a similar option of popular sovereignty (which led to bloody Kansas) and it also Created a strong reaction in the North to go against slavery even more. This only continued the divide between North and South.

From the 1830s to 1870s the Abolitionist movement tried to achieve immediate emancipation of slaves. At this time it separated the abolitionists from the semi anti-slavery people and the "Free soilers". Abolitionist ideas spread through religion as well like Baptists and Methodists as well as independent anti-slavery free churches. The abolitionist movement showed that people not only politically wanted more free states but many wanted an end to segregation and wanted equal rights. Abolitionists were also in support of women's rights and in 1848 the Seneca Falls Convention was held by women to start advocating for Women's rights. After the 1840's the strong political influence the North had was undeniable. Some important Political speakers were Fredrick Douglass, Wendell Phillips, and Lucy Stone. This movement made the North separate their ideas completely from the south and made it seem as though they held more power over the Government and people.

Document written in 1854 explaining US's purchase of Cuba from Spain that implied if Spain were to decline they'd declare war. Pierce was in favor of annexing Cuba as a Slave state which was to appease the South. After the Manifesto was passed the North was angered by another attempt of Southerners trying to spread slavery. It also caused free Soilers, who were recently angered by the fugitive Slave Law, to say it was unconstitutional. This also caused rise of the Republican Party. The Manifesto caused damage to Pierce's Administration because of his sympathy for the South. Buchanan was then elected after him. Soule, Buchanan, and John Y. Mason had influence on the Manifesto. This was another way of showing the economic split between the North and South. The South continued to fight for more Slave states while the North continued to hold more power in the Government.

Passed by Congress in May 30, 1854. It allowed the states in this territory to decide whether they would be a slave or free state. It replaced the Missouri Compromise which angered the North, but the South was highly in favor of it. In Kansas this caused major conflict between the non-slave settlers and the pro-slave settlers. They held an election in the state run by Pro-slave settlers but they were charged with fraud by the anti-slave settlers. The anti-slave settlers held another election but the pro-slave settlers refused to vote. This caused there to be 2 different legislatures in Kansas. Violence soon broke out with the anti-slave settlers led by John Brown. President Franklin Pierce was in favor of the pro-slave settlers and sent federal troops in to Kansas to stop the violence. Eventually in 1861 Kansas was majority anti'slave settlers and adopted a constitution to become a free state.

or Dred Scott v. John F.A. Sanford. Took place in March 1857 where the supreme court ruled that Dred Scott, who resided in a free state after leaving his former master, was not a free man because no African american could ever be a citizen of the US. Dred Scott was owned by John Emerson, who was a military man and moved around a lot with Scott. Dred Scott tried to purchase his freedom after Emerson died but Emerson's wife declined. Scott and his wife took this to court and the case lasted years. Chief of Justice Taney made the decision that State citizenship wasn't the same as National citizenship, therefore African Americans couldn't sue the federal court because they ween't citizens. Later Scott did get his freedom but not through court. Taney received much backlash from the North for his blatant Pro-Slavery decision. This caused the north to become even more hostile towards the South and separate them even more.

The first stage in the plan was to set up a strong hold in the mountains for freed slaves. Brown and his group of 16 whites and 5 blacks seized the arsenal which didn't take long to aer the state. 17 people died and Brown and his few remaining followers were hung afterwards. James Brown became a hero for the abolitionists and caused the Southerners to believe the abolitionists would stop at nothing to end slavery.

Election held on Nov. 6, 1860, when Republican Abraham Lincoln defeated Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, and Constitutional Union candidate John Bell. This election showed the split in politics between the North and South and caused South Carolina to succeed from the Union. Before the Election the South held a convention but were unable to decide a policy for slavery and therefore couldn't find a candidate to elect. Douglas got most the delegates votes so he then ran for president. The Republican convention was held in Chicago whee most people were in favor of abolishing slavery but not in the states that already had it. Their first candidate was William H. Seward who was considered a favorite. Seward led Lincoln into the running and then Lincoln was nominated. He won the majority of the electoral house. The south was unhappy with the Republican president and south carolina was the first to decide to leave the Union.
