This bread is, without a doubt, the most endearing recipe in the kitchen of the Day of the Dead, and it cannot be missing from the offerings or from the tables of Mexican homes.  Its origin is of pre-Hispanic inspiration, it is round and it has a decoration that represents a skeleton skull and four cross-shaped bones, which symbolize the four directions of the universe in pre-Columbian cosmology.
The best known is the bread that is made with anise, vanilla and orange zest as the main ingredients, and is covered whith sugar.

Sugar skulls
They are the sweet elements of the celebration and serve both to decorate and to enjoy the palate.  They are made in the shape of a skull and have bitumen on them.  The designs vary by each creator;  the bitumen is brightly colored and also has white chocolate, aluminum foil or colored strips are put on it (which is where the name of the person to who it is given or the name of the deceased to who the offering is made is written)  , shiny beads and sequins.

From its preparation, everything revolves around the fraternal, the conversations that arise around its preparation, the stories, the laughter, the teachings and the fellowship.

 There are an infinity of varieties, but the most typical are those that come wrapped in corn husks and stuffed with chicken or pork.  As we all know in Mexico, the dough is nixtamalized and mixed with butter.  They are cooked in a steamer and served with refried beans and sauce.

It represents the vision that pre-Hispanic cultures had of death.

The altar of the dead consists of several floors where the syncretism of the pre-Hispanic religions merges with the Catholic religion.

The basic levels of an altar of the dead are heaven and earth. It can have up to seven levels, where each step symbolizes the steps necessary to reach Mictlán, the place of eternal rest.

The altar is placed on a table, in some room inside the home, and this will be the place where the Day of the Dead offerings will be.

According to the belief, the gifts placed on the altar attract spirits to facilitate the journey from Mictlán to the homes of their relatives to enjoy a night out.
