In the case of septic arthritis, there will be erythema, increased temperature, swelling, pain, limitation of movement.
In the case of ankle sprain, there will be history of trauma, decreased range of movement, pain, look for scars

Lab investigations: CBC, ESR, C-reactive protein
Radiological investigations: X-Ray

On palpating: tenderness
Inability to stand on the affected ankle.
Stiffness 
Doing the movements to assess the affected tendon
Pain on passive movement.

-Ask the patient to locate area of pain
-Ask patient to walk and inspect gait (expect patient to limp) 
-Inspect foot while patient is still standing then inspect again while patient is sat down (expect the affected ankle to be swollen, red or scars that allowed entry of infection) 
- palpate the foot for temperature and contour (expect affected foot to be warm) 
-palpate major foot landmarks and arteries 
-move the foot passively and actively ( expect pain of passive movement and a reduction in range of motion actively) 
-do special tests( expect normal results) 
-inspect the patients footwear and thank the patient and go home :)
