INFORMATION FOR VISITING

Welcome to the Law Workshop

We are delighted to welcome new and returning students back to our Law Workshop. The Law Workshop is a study space and resource centre for law students and staff. There is a wide variety of textbooks, law reports, journals, and periodicals to help you with your studies. The Workshop is also equipped with printing facilities.

Location:

Our new entrance is at the rear of 8 Professors' Square. You will need your student card to swipe in for access!

Opening hours:

The workshop is open during term time Mon-Fri 9.15-4.45.

Study Space:

We have quiet study spaces for law students, as well as a separate group room for class discussions.

If you are using a study space, you can also browse the bookshelves and check out high demand books using our self-service machine.

Please consult the member of staff available if you wish to borrow any of our other items.

Book Borrowing:

Due to temporarily limited space in the Workshop, if you need a specific book and do not intend to use our study space, please email law-workshop@glasgow.ac.uk in advance. We will then locate the book and have it ready for you to collect.

All our books are searchable on the University Library’s online catalogue.

We also have a wide selection of eBooks and online journals. Guides on finding eBooks are available here.

"In Black and White" is a biography of Alexandra Wilson's experience of the bar so far as a junior criminal and family law barrister. See her website here for further details: https://www.essexbarrister.com/books

The book is fantastically written, and inspiring for any young person considering becoming a criminal barrister. A rather apt read for the current climate of strikes within the justice system. I'd recommend reading this alongside both of the Secret Barrister's books ("The Secret Barrister" and "Fake Law")

Law workshop renovation

We have recently refurbished the Law Workshop!

The School of Law was granted nearly £2 million by the University to enhance the workshop space and create a base for the GO Justice Centre and Emma Ritch Law Clinic.

The goal of the project was to preserve the tradition of leather-bound case reports and acknowledge the visual presence of the ‘law library’ as an inspiration for legal scholars, while fostering innovation and creativity within that space.

While the Law Workshop is principally a space for law students and legal researchers, it needs to be open and externally facing if we are to properly signal our commitment to social justice, access to law and our place as a civic institution. We wish to ‘welcome into’ our Law Workshop, external partners in experiential learning, social justice collaborations and public legal education.

Plans included a new accessible entrance via the back of the building and reception spaces to better support our disabled students and visitors. There are also silent and group study areas, and state-of-the art AV facilities. The clinic space includes a collaborative space for students and staff working on cases with offices for clinic and GO Justice staff.

The development of this facility will allow the School to significantly develop its clinical legal education and student support space. A key part of this vision is the establishment of the Emma Ritch Law Clinic, the first of its kind in the UK. The ‘Emma Ritch Law Clinic’ will provide unique ‘real world’ teaching opportunities which will greatly enhance student talent attraction.
