"The problem of forced displacement of people is among the most acute that the United Nations has faced throughout its history: one of the most vulnerable groups in the world is people displaced by conflict, persecution or other human rights violations.Refugees deserve our recognition and respect. Respect is more than just tolerance. It is necessary to stop and think about the loneliness and sense of abandonment that many refugees feel today. And we have to ask ourselves what we can do in connection with this "

I believe that one of the mistakes we educators do in welcoming sensitive groups in our schools, like refugees and immigrants, is that we fail to understand than not all special attention is discrimination. Refugee children and parents need special attention. We need to be sure that they do understand what we expect from them. We need to stand on their side while they enculturate in our educational habits. And, most of all, we need to make sure that everyone is engaged to this task, meaning that we, teachers, can only offer little compaired with the peers. It's the peers of the dominant population who will help the children acquire the language and the social skills they need in their new society. This is that the children are much better helpers for the children than the adults.

Last year I was in Berlin, I participated in a training Course in Berlin. I met a refugees family and we talked a few hours about their problems, the way they came to Germany, the situation in Syria and the most important about their feelings. The father spoke good German, although they were in Germany only since two months. He wanted to work, they needed money, but it was not possible, because their papers were not ready.
It was an extraordinary experience for me to meet them face to face. I understood much better how much understanding and tolerance they need from all of us.
