Mixed ETB school

Coláiste an Phiarsaigh generally has 3 classes of 30 students in each year group

PE facilities consist of one small hall with a storage container for equipment, a changing rooms and a swimming pool. There are 3 small outdoor basketball courts and a playing pitch. The school makes use of a nearby gym in the community, Evcore.

The junior cert short course is not in use and leaving Cert PE is no longer required yet available in the school.

JC students

Those in the junior cert cycle were mostly aged between 12 and 15 and are of mixed gender. Interest levels were surprisingly high with many involved in extracurricular teams and clubs outside of school. Those who do not participate in club sports were keen and eager to learn new skills.

All students had high levels of thinking, reasoning and remembering thus making cognitive ability high.

All were proficient in locomotor fundamental skills, with all but a few with high levels of stability and object control skills.

First and second years were fully engaged with the activity and rarely needed added motivation or discipline, which was not the case with third years, whose affective domain was poor and classroom management was tough.

In terms of the learning needs of students, it was made clear to me that students needed more educating in relation to sport such as health related activity, physiology and basic rules of various sports.

Rationale

I wish to design my own Junior Cycle Short Course for Physical Education to help build on the success that the existing course has already had. There are still flaws in the course of which I wish to tackle. I wish to make PE accessible and enjoyable by all by using learning and teaching styles that will intrigue all students. For the rationale I explored a number of different curriculum in order to choose the best tactic for my own short course. They are depicted below on the bottom left of the picture attached. Praxis is the method that I felt would target and entice the most students into participating to their best ability in PE. The learning theory involved with Praxis uses aspects of Connectivism, through digital aids, and Social Theories of Learning . I hope to grow learner autonomy using an action and reflection process.
