Responsibilities of the DEA

The DEA is responsible for making key decisions regarding the delivery of education in the community. These decisions include:

• Choosing the language of instruction and the language model used in the school

• Establishing the school calendar

• Developing registration and attendance policies

• Developing an Inuuqatigiisiarniq (discipline) policy

• Issuing suspensions and expulsions

• Working with RSO to hire school staff, including teachers and principals

• Providing early childhood education programs that promote Inuit language and culture

Structure of the DEA

Each DEA has the following structure:

• Seven elected members (the CSFN has five members)

• Members serve four-year terms

• One chairperson and one vice-chairperson

• Committees for:

  • Human Resources

  • Finance

  • Inuuqatigiisiarniq (discipline policies)

  • Attendance

• Meetings held at least once per month

Overall, the DEA plays a vital role in ensuring that education in Nunavut reflects community priorities, Inuit language, and cultural values.

What did I learn about boards?

I learned that they approve and monitor the budget and financial statements and the board is accountable for responsible use of funds such as parent fees, government grants, and fundraising.

(Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit) and they encourage culturally appropriate curriculum implementation.

What do you WANT TO KNOW about Boards?

I would like to know how they decide who gets to be on the board and how do you join?

What did you LEARN about Boards?

They have monthly meetings, they talk about how the previous month went, if they need to make any changes they discuss the topics and all decide together. If there are any questions or concerns they bring it up in meetings. We then have a staff meeting and discuss the changes that need to happen.

I would like to know how they decide what days are PD days, I’d also like to know is how do they choose their members and how to join.

What did you LEARN about

I learnt that at the meetings they get nominations and vote, the person with the most votes get to join. Members also get 4 years per term, and meetings are held once a month.

The DEA is a federal law enforcement agency under the U.S. Department of Justice.

What the DEA does:

• Enforces the Controlled Substances Act

• Regulates manufacturing, prescribing, and dispensing of controlled substances

• Issues DEA registration numbers to:

  • Physicians

  • Nurse practitioners

  • Dentists

  • Pharmacies

  • Hospitals

• Investigates diversion, fraud, and illegal prescribing

• Conducts audits and inspections

👉 The DEA operates at the federal level.

These are state-level regulatory bodies. Examples include:

• State Medical Board

• State Board of Nursing

• State Board of Pharmacy

They:

• Issue professional licenses

• Investigate complaints

• Discipline providers (suspension, probation, revocation)

• Set state-specific scope-of-practice rules

Important distinction:

• You cannot get a DEA registration without an active state license.

• If your state license is suspended, your DEA registration usually becomes invalid.

• Both can act independently.

Example Scenario

If a physician overprescribes opioids:

• The State Medical Board may investigate for unsafe practice.

• The DEA may investigate for violations of the Controlled Substances Act.

• Both may take action separately.
