The German-Polish Non Aggression Pact (signed in 1934) was an agreement to promote the development of peaceful relations between the two nations and was expected to last 10 years. Both Germany and Poland hoped to use it to find solution for their individual political, economical, and social problems. Poland was anxious about the growing tensions with their neighbors, Germany and the Soviet Union, but at the same time did not want to become overly reliant on other European powers for help, so they signed the agreement with Germany instead. Germany, on the other hand, signed the agreement in the hopes of weakening Polish-French relations, strengthening opposition to communism, as well as gaining Lebrensraum after the territorial losses of the Treat of Versailles.

Effects:
This pact led to a period of good relations between the two nations. However, Hitler still had motives for obtaining Lebensraum for the Germans, and it became increasingly clear to the Polish that Hitler would begin demanding territory which they would not be willing to give, pushing them to sign mutual assistance agreements with Britain and France. German-Polish relations continued to deteriorate as Hitler truly made the territorial requests, which Poland refused, prompting the Nazis to pull out of the agreement. This led to the eventual invasion of Poland on Sept 1, 1939, marking the start of WWII.

In April 1935, representative of France, Britain, and Italy met in a coalition in Stresa, Italy. The agreement was triggered by Germany's announcement of rearmament, which breached articles of the Treaty of Versailles, and aimed to oppose Hitler's proposed actions. Mussolini signed the agreement in hopes that it would prevent British and French interference with his expansion plans in Abyssinia. However, the agreement had vague terms, no clear actions or aims, and none of the leaders wanted to actually invade Germany, which was necessary to deal with Germany's actions. The front broke down completely when Italy invaded Abyssinia two months later.

Effects:
The failure of the Stresa Front was a turning point for Italy, as it later pushed Italy further away from Britain and France and closer to Germany, setting the conditions for the Axis powers to be formed for WWII.

In June, 1935, Germany and Great Britain signed an agreement limiting the size of the German navy (Kreigsmarine) to 35% of the British Royal Navy. This was agreed on by the British in hopes that it would limit German expansion, but the action was done without consultations to Italy or France, and the agreed upon naval size far exceeded the size set by the Treaty of Versailles. Due to mis-phrasing in the agreement, it also allowed Germany to produce unlimited U-boats, which was previously forbidden by the Treaty. Hitler ultimately renounced the agreement in April 1939.

Effects:
The treaty was beneficial to Germany, as it allowed them the ships to reach iron imports from Scandinavia, as well as allowed them to build submarines. The agreement drew criticism and controversy internationally for the British, as it breached the agreements of the Treaty of Versailles and allowed the Germans more freedom to rearm. It also strained relations between Britain and France, who were angered by Britain's action and believed they were acting for personal gain, as  the German fleets would be close to the French coast and could harm French welfare.

Following Italy's invasion of Abyssinia, their relations with France and Britain were extremely strained, and Hitler saw this as a chance to draw them into an alliance with Nazi Germany. This prompted Hitler to support Mussolini's interventions in support of the rebels during the Spanish Civil War. Following their victory, the two nations formed an alliance in Berlin by from the Rome-Berlin Axis, which allowed Germany and Italy to follow a common foreign policy. The alliance ultimately grew out of each nation's personal interests in foreign expansion.

Effects:
The Axis was a later followed by the Anti-Comintern Pact of 1936 between Japan and Germany, as they were aligned in anti-communist interests. Italy later joined in 1937. The Rome-Berlin Axis and Anti-Comintern Pact were therefore the fore-runners for the final Axis powers in WWII and drew the nations closer together for they later alliance.

Signed on May 22nd, 1939, the Pact of Steel was Italy and Germany's agreement to a military and political alliance, based on the assumption that war would break out in the coming years. The Pact agreed that the two nations would provide mutual assistance, joint propaganda, economic cooperation, and that neither would agree to peace terms without the other's consent. For Mussolini, the agreement was not only a defensive alliance against the Western democratic powers, but also a support for his plans in the Balkans. Neither nation truly trusted the other, and only warily exchanged plans.

Effects:
The Pact of Steel later became the Tripartite Pact in 1940, forming the official Axis alliance between Germany, Italy, and Japan, which would continue into WWII as the three nations fought against the Allied powers together.

The Anglo-Polish Treaty was a five year mutual defense and assistance pact between Britain and Poland. The British had feared that the German-Polish Non Aggression Pact would mean that, with Germany's eastern front covered, they would turn to attack their Western neighbors. Britain therefore signed the treaty with Poland, agreeing that they would support and defend the other if necessary, and that no terms of peace would be negotiated unless mutually agreed upon. Prime Minister Chamberlain promised the Polish independence, but not territorial integrity, as they hoped that it would allow Germany to take what they wanted from the Polish border without turning to war. He also wished to use the Treaty as a way to counter the campaign of some British officials for an alliance with Russia.

When Hitler later invaded Poland in September 1939 and gained the resources that Germany would need for a war, Britain declared war on Germany in accordance to the mutual defense and assistance agreements of the Treaty. With that, so began World War II.

The Anti-Comintern Pact was signed in 1936 between Germany and Japan. In this pact, the two nations agreed that communism would cause the disintegration of existing states, and the nations would therefore cooperate in defense against communism and to contain the spread of communism. Prior to signing the pact, Japan had left the League of Nations and was looking for allies to defend against the Soviet Union, who they saw as the main threat to their conquests of Asia. The pact was therefore a safeguard for Japan over Manchuko (Manchuria) against the Soviet Union. Hitler agreed to an alliance with Japan as he hoped to later invade the Soviet Union, as saw the pact as a way to distract Russian military troops in the east so that Germany could attack them in the west. Italy later joined the pact in 1937.

Effects:
The members of this pact (Germany, Italy, Japan) would later join together again in the Pact of Steel, which were the Axis powers in WWII. This pact therefore set the foundations for this alliance and strengthened the relations between the future Axis powers.

Signed on August 23, 1939, the Nazi-Soviet Pact (Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact) was nonaggression pact between Germany and the Soviet Union for 10 years. In the period prior to 1939, Hitler was becoming increasingly aggressive as he invaded other nations and annexed territories. The relations within Europe were increasingly tense as war began brewing. Stalin wanted to stay on good terms with Germany, who he knew would eventually invade the Soviet Union, and therefore wished to sign the pact in order to maintain peaceful relations and buy time to build up the Soviet military. The pact also stated how the two nations would divide Eastern Europe (e.g. Poland, Baltic states), so Stalin also wished to use it to allow him to invade and annex the Baltic states. Hitler, on the other hand, signed the pact to ensure that Germany would be able to invade Poland unopposed, as well as to avoid another two front war. The treaty eventually fell apart in 1941 when the Nazis invaded the Soviet Union.

As a result of this pact, Hitler was able to invade Poland without opposition, which he did just one week after the signing of the pact. He knew that he no longer had to fear the Soviet army and gambled that Britain and France would not fulfill the terms of their treaty agreements of defense with Poland. After he invaded Poland, Britain and France declared war on Germany, and WWII began.
