(The Great Depression, part 1 lecture) gives a great back story of why we called it the great depression and even gives possible reasons of what caused it. Everyone knows the great depression was sad and depressing, hence the name. But I chose this painting because a majority of the other art work did make me sad. This artist had a good idea to make this painting, I believed she painted it to make people smile. When I looked at this painting it made me smile. People of all races, gender and occupation in one subway train. All either tired from work, chatting up a conversation, reading the newspaper, applying makeup and even one looks like he may have had a little to much to drink! Yes, they are keeping to themselves but nobody looks bothered.

(1934-The Art of the New Deal-Article)-President Franklin D Roosevelt, "Hell, they've got to eat just like other people" But did we really need 15,663 paintings, murals, prints crafts and sculptures for government buildings? Maybe these great artist should have been paid do other things like help with new crop production after the drought, or building new housing for homeless children. Art and Music are important to our culture but I believe government funds should have been used on more serious relief efforts.

Baseball is considered today to be "America's Game" and while I believe that Football has overtaken Baseball in current popularity, in the 1930's it was king. Sports like Baseball provided an escape for many people to not think about the current economic woes. Having fun for a few hours is depicted here in the painting and Baseball was something that could unite people of all backgrounds for a short time. I chose this piece because I am a baseball fan and like seeing the game being played even in the worst of times to bring people's spirits up. "The 1920s also witnessed the maturation of professional sports. Play-by-play radio broadcasts of major collegiate and professional sporting events marked a new era for sports, despite the institutionalization of racial segregation in most."

I believe that money should have certainly be spent of people in need, to cloth, food, and shelter those who could not afford it and provide employment. I do believe that funding art and music have certain merits that should allow them to receive funding like the rest. Art and music provide entertainment to many including the artists themselves. During a "depressing time" that was certainly needed and gave many some mental health relief. Art and music also form a time capsule that gives us insight into the life of the people who lived during the 1930's and is apart of history. Allowing funding of an aspect of our culture was important in keeping that tradition alive and we can enjoy them to this day. "...that helped support the likes of young Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock before they became luminaries." (The Art of the New Deal. Adler). If it wasn't for the funding FDR made for artists, we wouldn't have had the next generation of art that was created.
