John Locke was an English philosopher and physician, widely known at one of the most influential Enlightenment thinkers and commonly known as the "Father of Liberalism." His work greatly affected the development of epistemology and political philosophy. Locke's liberal theory and classical republicanism are reflected in the United States Declaration of Independence. Locke thought that if a ruler infringes the terms of the contract that empowers him or seizes property without consent, the people can resist and depose him.
