Turkish president Recep Erdogan announced that the hit job was orchestrated at the "highest levels" of the Saudi government, implying involvement of the powerful crown prince but stopping short of naming him or his father, King Salman.
The Saudis deny any involvement by the crown prince, maintaining that the death was the result of a premeditated rendition plan gone awry after having offered multiple contradictory explanations. 

The Saudi Arabian government has now sentenced 5 of the 11 suspects to the death penalty for killing Jamal Khashoggi.

Saudi officials continued to give conflicting explanations of what happened to Khashoggi until more than a month later, on November 15, the Saudi public prosecutor said Khashoggi was given a lethal injection after a struggle and his body was dismembered inside the consulate after his death.

The US, Canada, France and the UK have imposed sanctions against 18 Saudis who have been linked to the killing. These sanctions do not include the Saudi crown prince.

Germany, Finland and Denmark are some of the European nations that have cancelled arms deals with Saudi Arabia since the Khashoggi’s death.

He was told that he would have to return on October 2. He told his friends that he had been treated well and that he wasn’t expecting any problems.
