Atticus defends Mr. Cunningham because he understands why people go to such drastic measures just to make a point. If no one tries to voice their opinion that something is wrong, nothing will ever change. Anyone can clearly see that Maycomb needs to change its social values, so Atticus defends Mr. Cunningham to show his kids that sometimes you have to do drastic things to prove a point.

Judge Taylor knows how people learn about others. If someone despises someone, they will only see their faults and only hear their complaints, and if someone likes another person, they will only see their successes, and only hear their achievements., In short, people only learn about what they want to know, or what they expect to know about the other person. Because of this, no one tries to open their eyes to see deeper the their own mentality.

Atticus knows that people will always think they are more right than what someone else says, and because of this people will always think differently than others. A person's daily experiences in a society shows them what is right and what is wrong which then influences them into believing that they are right, and over time it becomes hard for them to change their beliefs. For example we see how long it took just for slavery to be abolished while racism and prejudice is still going on today.

This theme is still relevant to present day today because there is so much diversity. Right now we can connect to any place on the Earth with just internet connection. Because we have access to so many places, it is hard to remember that not everyone has the same opportunities as us, causing us to think differently about other people. One main example is perspective can change because of race. For example, when a police officer killed George Floyd, race can cause different opinions on how this officer should be punished. Black people could want him to be sentenced to jail for life, and white people might want him to walk of free because he was doing his "job". Second, gender can also influence perspective. In every country, women are paid less than men and in some countries male children are preferred to female. According to payscale.com, women get paid 81 cents for every one dollar earned by men at best. This will obviously cause women and men to have different perspectives on their experiences in life. Lastly, religion can influence what people see and do in their life. Many religions have churches, mosques, and temples. They also have texts that people are supposed to read which might give them a different outlook on life. In summary physical and mental characteristics give everyone a different perspective on almost everything, and you cannot judge another person by what they truly believe.
