Trials Stage: 4 o'clock. The hero is tested and sorts out allegiances in the Special World. Odysseus talks about all his trials in his speech where it states, "... A strongpoint on the coast of the Cicones. I stormed that place and killed the men who fought..."(Homer 9. 152-153). Another trial faced during Odysseus' journey is, "... Soon enough, with Lotus Eaters... offering the sweet Lotus to our friends- but those who ate this honeyed plant, the Lotus, never cared to report, nor to return..." (Homer 9. 95-99). Odysseus defeats the Cyclops when, "I drew it from the coals and my four fellows gave me a hand, lugging it near the Cyclops as more than natural force nerved them; straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye..." (Homer 233-237) The Greek hero, Odysseus also had to outplay the Laestrygonians and Circe when it states, "... She gave me the best to tempt me. But no pleasure came; I huddled with my mind elsewhere, oppressed. Circe regarded me..." (Homer 404-407). Odysseus then had to face the Sirens and finding the immunity when it states, "Sirens, crying beauty to bewitch men coasting by; woe the innocent to hear the sound!" (Homer 4-6) "I carved a massive cake of beeswax into bits and rolled them in my hands until they softened..." (Homer 111-113). Lastly he had to face Scylla by, "But as I sent them towards Scylla, I told them nothing, as they could do nothing," (Homer 161-162). This shows Odysseus being wise to not freak out the men from helping him.

Go to the sea beach and sea-breasting ship; drag it ashore, full length upon the land; stow gear and stores in rock-holes under cover; reture; be quick; bring all your dear companions," (Homer 436-439). Near the middle of the story, the hero enters a central space in the Special World and confronts death or faces his or her greatest fear.
Odysseus faces his greatest fear when he weeps for 7 years stuck on Calypso's Island. Calypso states to Odysseus, "Son of Laertes, versatile Odysseus, after these years with me, you still desire your old home?" (Homer 101-103) This shows she is trying to guilt him to stay with her instead of returning home.

The hero takes possession of the treasure won by facing death.
Odysseus' treasure is when he takes his ship and crew home after facing many trials. As they are on their last journey straight to Ithaca, Odysseus states, "I mustered all the crew and said: 'Old shipmates, our stores are in the ship's hold, food and drink; the cattle here are not for our provision, or we pay dearly for it," (Homer 853-856). This shows he treasures his shipmates because he's protecting them from getting themselves in trouble. The ship is a treasure because it helps him sail to Ithaca.
