When we got in we realised that someone had left the degu enclosure open so we had to safely find and catch the degus as they was hiding behind the cupboards and enclosure. This was a big hazard because it could have caused serious harm to the animals and also to staff and students as we could have tripped over them.

First we had to check his health to make sure it was safe to groom him which included checking the health of his ears, eyes, coat, nails and teeth. Then we had to bath him in the dog baths at Smallbridge. Once we had shampooed him and rinsed out the soap we had to dry him, first with a towel and then a hair dryer whilst combing him to make sure his fur didn't get knotted up. Our group got sent to the Exotics Room where we had to change the water bowls in each tank and then we had to feed the animals. We had to go into the food prep room and cut up fruit and vegetables to feed to the tortoises and bearded dragons and then we had to defrost frozen mice to feed to the snakes and snapping turtle. I fed mice to a few of the snakes and although i was a little bit scared at first i felt more comfortable by the end. First we had to tie our hair back and put on overalls to prevent infections and parasites from spreading and then we had to collect our equipment including a tray for water, a jug, a towel, and gauze. We handled snakes the bosc monitor lizard and the iguana. I learnt how to correctly handle a snake, making sure we supported it's whole body and not to let it dangle as it can cause damage to it's spine. I also learnt about iguanas shedding their skin and unlike snakes they only shed their skin in parts not as a whole piece of skin. We bathed rocky a caviller King Charles spaniel. We had to brush all the knots out of his fur first and we had to cut out a big knot in his ear we then had to bath him with shampoo and conditioner and then dry him and remove the tear stains from his eyes using cotton wool balls and hot water. We had to soak their hooves in hibiscrub to help get rid of any infections and we had to brush and clip there hooves. One goat in particular was quite tricky to deal with as it had quite a few problems with its hooves and didn’t like being restrained but I think we worked really well together to restrain the goat so the technicians could have a look at it. We were advised to clip the hoof and soak it in hibiscrub for longer.
