I think pedagogies of kindness require some inversion of the traditional power dynamics we see in college classrooms to invite students to help co-create learning experiences. It involves instructor self-reflection and praxis and positionality and giving students plenty of flexibility and opportunities to exercise agency. I also think it requires attending to systems of oppression in our curriculum and teaching strategies.

Even before we get to know our students, we are well aware of some common challenges that they face today. When I read my course syllabi, I'd try to ask myself if I'm one of the students who may have to juggle between multiple part-time jobs, or take care of young children or elderly family members, or fall ill during the semester, would I feel cared for and supported if I take this course?

There are times I have the capacity to empathize with my students' struggles and to balance these needs appropriately alongside compassion for myself and the broader needs in the program, the college, etc. The idea of a 'pedagogy of kindness' suggests a deeper level of commitment to designing systems that are kind and collaborative, and this suggest we share control in way that seems antithetical to how higher education currently exists. How do I empower and collaborate with students when I am struggling to empower myself in these same systems?

I imagine a kind of teaching practice that can relate to each student as a complex human being first and as an enrolled student second. We must hold students to standards, but we must recognize the artifice of so much of higher education and the way "standards" and "fairness" rhetoric is used to marginalize many students. So, I think about trying to be a teacher who shows compassion and a desire to connect with the student at a basic human level primarily and trying to downplay all the institutional forms and processes that create distance between students and teachers.

I do feel as if I am able to be genuinely kind and compassionate with my students, and it has been reflected back to me by them. One of the things I want to work on is finding a good balance between compassion and maintaining boundaries with deadlines. I offered a lot of grace with COVID and knowing that my students have a lot of life in their lives. And...it has created a situation for me where assignments pile in (often not well done) in the last few days of the quarter. It feels like a disservice to both my students and me. Thus the pedagogy of kindness feels as if it can help to better ground why we offer lenience when we do, and why we create strict rules that are just commonplace but inequitable in academia.

A former colleague used to point out the distinction between being nice and being kind, indicating that only being "nice" (i.e. going overboard in accepting every excuse or extending too many exceptions to class rules/policies) is NOT truly being kind to a student, because it simply sets them up for failure later. A pedagogy of kindness extends grace and empathy while not losing sight of the bigger picture, which is that goals can still be attained even in the face of less-than-ideal circumstances.

Students are "whole people", and when we can design our classroom cultures and experiences for how they want to feel, I believe we establish trust. We need that trust to press students during challenging times, they will know we've got their backs because the culture is set up for that. Everyone is doing the best they can on any given day, so designing for care (and I imagine kindness) means we invest an abundance of generosity in what they bring into class every time they enter.

I think it requires that we try to understand students as whole people, not just in an academic sense. That means we have to take time to get to know them and help them be comfortable approaching us to discuss any challenges, and that we are willing to be flexible as the context makes appropriate. A quick example, my syllabus says papers must be turned into the LMS, but I had a student hand-write an essay on the bus while returning from an athletic competition. While we looked for a better solution for both of us going forward, I felt it was really important to acknowledge her motivations in prioritizing the due date over the submission rules, and to understand how being in season is affecting her stress level so I can provide more encouragement to her.

Despite my awareness of how others' comments sometimes affect me, I sometimes don't realize the power I have to reach students in the classroom and beyond. While sometimes students have had to tell me that something I said was hurtful to them, those instances are thankfully rare. More often, they speak of something I said that was part of a lecture or an example of a concept that I did not realize was so salient. This is not only a pleasant acknowledgement that I am reaching my students, but a cautionary reminder that most students are listening despite how they may appear in class, perhaps hunched over their laptops. It's a reminder to tread lightly and lead with kindness. because something I say may have a lasting impact!

My understanding of kindness in the classroom is to be non-judgemental, be the "guide by the side, not the sage on the stage" and remember that students, esp in the virtual/online learning environment are juggling many things while studying. I go on the assumption that students are doing their best and just need a bit of thoughtful help from me to make their studies less onerous and overwhelming. Sending them the link to where they need to go online instead of sending them off on a merry-go-round to find the online place I mean, sending them a message to see if they are keeping up with the cohort and giving them the short cut advice to keep up rather than leaving them in the deep end with all the content that we serve up. Kindness is being mindful that they are just human beings wanting to do well and that my role is to be the authentic facilitator of that process who listens and helps. The primary objective is establishing a classroom environment that fosters support and inclusivity, ensuring that students feel respected. This approach encourages educators to take into account the emotional and social well-being of students in addition to their academic accomplishments. Teachers prioritize kindness to foster robust relationships, nurture a feeling of inclusion, and encourage favorable conduct. This approach not only improves student involvement and drive but also contributes to a more cohesive and efficient learning encounter. The pedagogy of kindness entails inclusively addressing students' concerns in the classroom. I employ these principles to direct my students throughout the course, guaranteeing their sense of inclusion. I ensure equitable treatment of all my students, acknowledging that a weakness for one student may be a strength for another.

So in practice that looks like finding resources and information that would not harm or traumatize already oppressed and marginalized students. It would mean curating activities that help grow and stretch the student without overloading them. It also means establishing trust, transparency, and grace in the learning environment.

It is unique and to understand what a student needs, you must first be willing to listen. From a pedagogical sense, this means building a space that is welcoming and establishes mutual trust. It also means creating opportunities for students to connect with you and with their peers. Finally, it means fostering engagement beyond the subject material so that you can hear what the student needs and respond in a way that demonstrates kindness to them.

Allowing yourself to view students as individuals with lives, challenges, and stories that shape who they are as whole people and not just learners in a classroom. Listening with care, giving honest feedback without judgment, and being flexible when life throws curveballs will allow students to know they’re supported, they’re more willing to engage deeply, take risks, and grow—not just as students, but as people.

A pedagogy of kindness, to me, means teaching as if every student is carrying an invisible backpack—full of experiences, fears, dreams, and distractions—and making sure my classroom is a place where they can set it down, even briefly. It means designing learning moments that whisper, “You’re safe here. You matter.” Kindness in pedagogy is not softness—it’s the quiet, radical act of seeing students fully and teaching in a way that helps them see themselves anew. It’s an invisible thread that ties together high expectations, emotional intelligence, and the courage to show up as both human and educator.

To me, a pedagogy of kindness means creating a learning environment rooted in empathy, respect, and patience. It goes beyond simply being “nice”, it involves understanding that every student comes with unique experiences, challenges, and strengths. A kind pedagogy holds high expectations while offering grace, support, and second chances when needed. It means listening actively, providing constructive feedback with compassion, and treating mistakes as opportunities for growth. Kindness in teaching fosters trust, strengthens relationships, and helps students feel safe, seen, and valued especially those who may already feel marginalized. Ultimately, it’s about teaching with humanity at the center.

A pedagogy of kindness is a teaching method that embraces students and their learning. Teaching methods should include having empathy to the student experience, such as differing pre-college education backgrounds, culture, language, and student life outside of class. Students should be encouraged to have a growth mindset, where they see the course as part of a journey. Everyone's journey will be different and occur at different paces, which is okay. Students should know that the class is a safe place to ask questions and have wonder about the world. For assessments, teachers should ne empathetic but firm as you want to teach deadlines and time management skills alongside wanting them to show you what they have learned.

A pedagogy of kindness is an approach to teaching that recognizes students as whole human beings and creates learning environments grounded in respect, empathy, and support. Rather than relying on rigid rules, fear of failure, or punitive structures, it values flexibility, clear communication, and the understanding that mistakes are essential to growth. Kindness does not mean lowering academic standards; instead, it makes rigor more accessible by ensuring students feel safe, motivated, and capable of learning. When students experience care and dignity in the classroom, they take greater intellectual risks, stay engaged, and ultimately learn more deeply.

In a dental class, applying the Pedagogy of Kindness means creating a supportive and empathetic learning environment where students feel respected and encouraged. This can include offering flexible assessments, such as allowing students to redo clinical procedures, providing constructive and positive feedback, and acknowledging the stress students face during practical exams. It also involves promoting inclusivity by giving extra practice opportunities for those anxious about working on real patients, being understanding about emergencies or health issues through make-up sessions, and fostering collaboration through peer teaching rather than competition. Overall, it focuses on compassion, fairness, and building confidence to enhance both learning and professional growth.

The Oxford dictionary defines kindness as "the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate." Whenever I teach, a few thoughts are at the forefront of my mind: 1) a person is spending their own time and money to learn what I have to teach them, 2) this person is seeking education to improve their own station in life, and 3) it is my responsibility to deliver that knowledge to them. If I were to rank those qualities in me that are most exercised when I teach, technical expertise and knowledge is not at the very top. I find that patience, empathy, and kindness are those qualities that I exercise the most. The greatest expert in any field robs the world of their knowledge if they cannot share it with a measure of kindness. Without kindness, only a fraction of what is taught survives transmission into the minds of our students.

If they know they can come to you with an issue and be met with a kind response, I think they are more likely to seek help and be more engaged in the course. I think it is important for us to remember our students are human too - they are not perfect and sometimes things happen! I don't believe they should be punished because of some shortcomings they may have, and this is an area when I think showing kindness can make a world of a difference in how that student proceeds in the course.

In my experience, kindness and empathy are key to learning. As teachers, we are often motivated by a desire to share knowledge, to share with others the joy that comes from feeling that we understand the world a little bit better. This is a useful and noble motivation, but it's important that enthusiasm doesn't get in the way of effective learning. Every learner has followed a different life path to end up in our classroom; they have different interests, different experiences and knowledge, different aptitudes, different challenges. Our natural instinct is to teach as we would want to learn, to explain ideas as we understand them, but what works for us will not work for ever learner. To help learners learn effectively, we need to do our best to understand who they are and what they want. This is easier said than done when working with large cohorts and limited contact time, but it begins with listening - to what students tell us, and what they show us through their actions. Are learners struggling with a particular concept? Maybe we need to review how it is being explained, or make more time to explore it. Does a student appear disengaged? Maybe we need to reframe the content in a more dynamic way, or perhaps introduce more active modes of learning; or it could be the case that this student has other factors in their lives that are making it difficult to learn at this moment, and we need to talk to them and find out how we can help further. Starting from a place where we don't assume that we already know what our learners need is the key to kindness.

I've found that when I lead with kindness, my students take more risks, ask better questions, and stick with the hard stuff longer. Honestly, it's made me a better teacher and made the work feel more like what I hoped it would be.

A lot of students do not like to ask questions because of previous bad experiences. I try to foster a pedagogy of kindness by closing each section of a lesson with, "What are your questions?" as opposed to "Do you have any questions?" The first is phrased as an assumption that there are or should be questions. Once I made this change, the dynamic in my classes also changed.
