In the article “Understanding the Digital Generation,” one of the main things that stuck out to me in the article was that educators must become learners themselves. Another one of the takeaways that I had was the fact that the teachers need to change their ways of teaching, they need to do to do more than just speaking. The last thing that I really took away from this article is that the students are becoming too dependent on different things. In 1815, the school district was worried about students being to dependent on paper, and then in 1950 individuals thought that the ball point pen was going to ruin education. Today’s students are using more technology than ever before. This article explains how this is a good thing. I agree that technology is a wonderful tool to use within the school system. My only concern with technology is what the students may be using it for at home and for how long they are using it. My question to the parents is: will you help your student learn to set boundaries while using technology? I enjoyed reading this article, but I would like to know more about how the overuse of technology affects the brain of students.

In this article there were a few things I took away. One of the things that I took away from this is that many people believe that technology and new ways of learning will cause traditional education to fade away, this is not true. Another big idea in this article is just in case learning vs just in time learning. Just in case learning is associated more with school and just in time learning is associated with technology. Another big thing is that technology can be used to help students develop needed skills that they will use throughout their life. Two sides that this article covers is that technology is good and that technology is bad. It goes over how some individuals think that technology is a bad thing that will make traditional education fall off rail, but then goes on and talks about how technology is a good thing. Technology helps with connections and helps students to learn different skills that they do not necessarily learn in school. The only question that I have about this is about the just in case vs the just in time learning. I will need to do more research on this topic.

Today I read an article called “Digital Citizenship in the Curriculum.” Some of the big points that I took away from this were that in today’s world, citizenship is digital. Social media is now used to appeal to voters. Also, instead of blocking social media in schools, teachers should teach students about it to help them grow as digital citizens. Lastly, one way that this concept can be taught to students is by having them study a topic and how it is represented across different platforms of social media. The pros and cons to this are that social media can be used for harmful purposes, but it could also be used spread democracy or justice. One question that I would like to be looked at more is, what is a surefire way to teach our students how to use social media to spread democracy and justice?
