2. Both country wanted to have superiority in space. Many thought they wanted to weaponize space which is why it was such a big contest for who can do it first. 
3. The space race revolutionized space traves and because of it we have many organizations such as space x trying to further space travel efforts.

Many aspects of technology in general are happening today because of space race. Without the acceleration in technology growth we wouldn't have many of the commodities we have today. 

To this day many countries fight for superiority in space and technology in general. Even though the USSR is no more the U.S. still competes to hold superiority in space and modern day technology.
