The most used communication method used by this interviewee is face to face communication. This type of communication can take place one on one and in group team meetings. This type of communication is most effective
because it allows them to set aside time to talk about important patient information and can respond to each other immediately to reach a solution of the problem in a short amount of time. This type of communication can also have
a draw back since in the mental health field there are crises that arise at times which hinder the availability of face to face contact. When this setback is a factor then this mental health counselor will use a phone to make contact with the necessary people who are not available at the time.

Email is also used when immediate and emergent information is not needed to be relayed or received.

Text messages are also a secondary means of communication. It is more effective than email and used when the information is not as lengthy or if there is just a short question that needs to be answered.

This individual teaches a preschool class and reports that
email is the most effective and most used type of communication. She uses email to touch base with her students’ parents to give updates on their progress and to relay important information. This type of communication is effective because it allows her to contact all parents at once since the kids are picked up at different times and communication time is limited. Some parents however do not
check their email so important information relayed that way may not be received in time or at all.

To overcome this drawback, the teacher sends home notes in
her students’ back packs as well. This way the information is sent out in different ways so the most amount of parents will receive it.

Text messages are also used by this teacher to send out alerts such as inclement weather and how it will affect the child’s class that day. Text messages are only used for emergency situations.

The parent that I interviewed has three children that attend school. She reports that she uses email and phone calls the most to get in contact with her children’s teachers. She states that email is the most effective and most used when she needs to ask a question that doesn’t need immediate
attention or when she needs to relay information about her child.

Phone calls are used when the situation that needs to be addressed is lengthy or if it is time sensitive.

This parent wishes there was more face to face interaction with the educators in her children’s school but understands the time constraint.

This parent also uses the internet to view her children’s grades and progress in school. She reports that notes are also exchanged between administrators at school and the parents such as permission forms or grade reports that need to
be signed. According to this parent, each teacher has a different type of preferred communication method.
