At times he was so hungry that he ate maggot-infested porridge and unfortunately was exposed to sexual abuse at a young age. After years of suffering in silence about what he had experienced he eventually came out and asked other survivors for help coping with the long-lasting effects of residential schools. As a result of this, the Indian Residential Schools Survivors Society was created in 2002, and he became its executive director, leading it for over a decade. He was one of four survivors who counselled Prime Minister Harper on the contents of the landmark apology by the federal government to all Residential School survivors.
