Fred Sasakamoose was one of the first Indigenous Canadians in the NHL, at the time of his arrival in the NHL (early 1950’s) there was a lot of underlying racism meaning that he faced a lot of controversies. He even went as far as to say that he never heard a word of encouragement due to the racism that he faced. Thanks to his effort to push past controversies, he was able to pave a way for more people of colour to join the NHL in the future with more acceptance.

At times he was so hungry that he ate maggot-infested porridge and unfortunately was exposed to sexual abuse at a young age. After years of suffering in silence about what he had experienced he eventually came out and asked other survivors for help coping with the long-lasting effects of residential schools. As a result of this, the Indian Residential Schools Survivors Society was created in 2002, and he became its executive director, leading it for over a decade.
In 1953-54 Fred Sasakamoose played 11 games in the NHL for the Blackhawks. He was one of the first indigenous people to play hockey at the highest level. After the NHL he started teaching young kids how to play hockey. In 2018, he became a member of the order of Canada. He inspired many young kids and showed indigenous kids that they could play in the NHL along with the white people. He also made the first nations community very proud.

Sasakamoose played only 11 games in the NHL, as a member of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1953-54 season. After his career ended, he spent decades mentoring and encouraging young Indigenous players across the country; in 2018 he was made a member of the Order of Canada, one of the nation’s highest civilian honors.

Taken from his family at a young age, Chief Robert Joseph suffered extreme abuse while spending over 10 years in a residential school. As a result of this trauma, Joseph founded the the Indian Residential Schools Survivors Society to ensure that no one would forget the horrors that occurred within Canada. Additionally, he played an active role in the creation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which consults regularly with the Canadian government.
