In the tradition, the boys ask the girls to accompany them at the prom.
The girls spend a lot of time making themeself beautiful by applying makeup, by going to the hairdresser, by putting on their beautiful dress etc...
During the party, students vote to elect the king and the queen of prom
Who in the movies are often the captain of the American football team and the captain of the cheerleaders (The most popular students)
When approaching the end of the prom, the winners are announced with a projector which points the two elected (It's not necessarily a couple already done, it can be two people who don't know each other). We call them the king and the queen of the prom : they get a crown and the queen gets flowers.

While in France, they aren't much high schools that make the prom but in the schools that celebrate it, they ( try to ) do in the same way as the Americans.

It takes place around an American soccer match with events like the parade of the queens of the school and a marching band show. Generally, the day after the match is held a ball where young people are invited and where they have to be well dressed.
In France homecoming is welcoming new students of all nationalities,  around a meal as well as animations, and explain the progress of their schooling, give them work.
