Joseph Pelling and Rebecca Sloan are British filmmakers who co-directed an horror web-series of childhood puppets with disturbing visuals and themes. The web series is called “Don’t hug me I’m scared”. Becky (Rebecca) made the puppets used in the short series of films. This web series, especially Epsiode one, inspired the craft video aspect in my first developments of the project. 

“untitled” is a parody of the extremes of social media in a humorous to scary tone. The unrealistic portrayal of “5 min crafts” and the reasons they are made, may be more sinister than they seem. The immediate belief that most things on the internet are TRUTHFUL, is becoming a real issue in the 21st century with the influence of technology, AI, and deep fakes that make these lies believable. I wanted to make a video of the “videos” you see online and a video of a guy acting out these instructions. From humble 5 min crafts to a self-crisis of repair. The disruption is the distinction of unrealistic to realistic outcomes with the side by side comparisons stretching the extremes of reality. These videos are fetishes WITHIN the “5 min crafts”. The aim is to progressively get more and more unhinged each frame. The distortions that deceive the truth are explored to act as a warning to never believe everything you see online. Alos how silly we are to absorb this type of content especially in 2020, Covid lockdowns. 

 Updated Part A  - Panacea

Panacea is a sculptural and film piece that upgrades objects from its original form and purpose. The irony of the material noodles, plays as a reference to social media “5 min crafts” by “fixing” an existing object. The title Panacea by definition and example is the “an answer or solution for all problems or difficulties”. The title reflects the humorous culture of social media by promising a cure for all solutions that are false and misleading. The noodles are a playful way to portray the upgraded and cured version of these found ready-made objects. The disruption of narratives and functions of these objects have been modified to be a new way of function.

Part B Statement 

Panacea is an evolutionary video that indirectly allures to the behaviours of internet algorithm. The beginning,  being a simple mislap then the “search” for an solution. The scrolling and recommendations of solutions on social platforms, feed into the persona’s unrealistic measure to fix relationships and self. Overcoming the denial of ending relationships and reality as an whole. As there’s no permanent solution to the everyday brokenness and uncertainty. The bizarre nature of the video is to encapsulate the spiralling of inner-self and the internet search engine. The last scenes of the film is to poke fun at the new age of contemporary art, as discussion of it’s value increases determined on its niche and “revolutionary” portrayal. 

Materials 

The material of noodles was not only a cost-effective material, but one that I could play with in terms of reverting it back to this arts and crafts genre (macaroni art). 

Another media, is film. I’m new to filming and editing, so I stepped up to the challenge of learning how to film and edit. From feedback, the video was needed to be able to express my concept. The sculptures/props themselves were odd, but lackluster in conceptual strength. The assistance of my video will hopefully prevail. 

Algorithms of the Internet. 

The nature of algorithms themselves are a type of disruption. The suggestions of videos to watch and its immediate follow-up after are a disruptive assumption of you and what you find entertaining. This project reminded me of the past algorithms of Youtube (2000-2010’s) where you would begin with a harmless video and hours later be greeted to a cursed piece of media. This is similar with the algorithms of false information, the consumption of false information and media was most evident during covid-19. As articles are surfacing and scaring the public. 

My piece is a summary of all, a summary of all media and its cursed impacts on the modern contemporary age. 

18/10/23 - We learned the fundamentals of woodwork and the techniques needed to make wood projects. (Drilling, saw etc)

25/10/23 - We had to make our version of what we wanted to create with the twist of using water bottomed as joints.

1/10/23 - I wanted to use my woodwork piece as a backdrop for my art pieces. 

I used it as an panorama foe my art sculpture display.

20/09/23 - Learned how to properly cut glass and the possibilities there are for glass

04/10/23 - Made more earrings and tried the blue pendant again. This workshop taught us how to safely use the sand blaster and prepare glass beforehand to reduce cutting ourselves. 

I did a bird engraving with the sand blaster and realized there were sections better performed than others. 

11/10/23 - Made some earrings and these were the result. We also went into the heat room where we made glass eggs for the first time.

In the compendium I took an interest in Gordon Matta Clark’s  video work, splitting 1974. With my project of fixing and upgrading objects in a humorous way, Clark splits an old house and fills voids of the building. His architectural background became part of his professional career of artistry. The fascination of creating holes, voids and gaps in abandoned spaces. The splitting and demolition of the house, by removing the foundation of the house is a commentary on socio-political scene and its withstanding gravity. The hazardous procedure of Goron Matta Clack’s slitting is evident as the house might fall at any given moment. Splitting interested me with the past concept of the disruption being interactive work that crumbles in your hands. Besides the concept developing into something else, it still informed me of how to broaden these “fixes” to these objects and self.

The presentation was held by Zoe, the class enjoyed the silliness of the work. Zoe highlighted how the background panorama was distracting against the other yellow objects. However, I wanted to portray them in a playful way so they aren't just showcased on a bench. I acknowledge the critiques of my display and film. The video came out more serious than I originally anticipated, besides this I’m proud of my efforts to challenge myself to develop a film.

To sum up my final work and experiences of 3D, I found myself trying to make an bizarre narrative of my feelings and portrayal of the internet. My challenges of this project was how to articulate my vision effectively in a film. Overall, I’m proud of what I produced in 6 weeks during these last stressful weeks of uni. Admittedly this was a big learning curve of an block for me, and probably my last film I’ll ever produce. 

Feedback from part A was to continue the film idea. Without the film, the reference may not be clearly communicated. The thoughts of installation such as a primary blue background was also mentioned. The presentation was brief but overall came out with a green light outcome. Another suggestion from peers was mixed, some wanting me to try other materials that craft DIY (do it yourself) videos. As well as others liking the silliness of noodles/ramen being the main material. 

What I need to do is more research and to write what my true goal and concept is.
