Ergot grows in rye bread. One of the rye fields, may have been ergotized. This means that those who eat this bread will get ergotism, long-term ergot poisoning. This can cause hallucinations, mania, etc. Symptoms started to show up in late 1691. This may have caused people accuse people, with the disease, of being witches for doing strange things.

Many people were very religious at the time, they were the Puritans. They believed that Satan, who opposes god, would make a pact with someone they would become either a witch (if it is a female) or a wizard (if it is a male). It was a crime punishable by death, so if they thought that someone was a witch it was very serious. People could be considered a witch if they "could hold a rifle, arm extended, with his finger in the barrel" (background essay 4).

A majority of the accused tended to be married, fairly older (people from ages 41-60, which were old at the time) people. Most of the accusers were single teens or young adults at the time (16-20). This could be that the younger people were accusing older people because older people tend to be "stranger" since there is an age difference.

This can give people a fear of magic trying to harm them. People diagnosed with it could have had a fear of encountering a witch. This means they might be more sensitive to strange things having an anxiety of something like this might happen.

There are quite a few causes of the Salem witch trials. One of the causes is that many people's religion made them very superstitious. Another reason is that due to a disease from eating bread people were acting strange. People had hysteria and had a fear of witches and witchcraft. Finally, there was an age difference and many of the accusers were young and accused were older.
