We begin our elective posting by attending a briefing and introduction session with Vicky (who is a PIC from Kechara). During the briefing session, Vicky explained about the activities/programs that are being conducted by Kechara such as Empowerment programs (teach baking and sewing so the participants can try to improve their financial and quality of life), Food Bank (collect donations and provide food supplies for the needy) and Soup Kitchen (provide food and other necessities for the poor and homeless). These activities/programs focus on ensuring the needy and poor receive the help and are able to improve their lifestyle. Vicky also showed us around the HQ where we can see the food storage area and the empowerment program area. We received cookies which are the sample product from the empowerment program. The next day, we conduct the first volunteering activities which are provisional deliveries. In which we need to send the donation to the old folks home and children home.

Points to remember from week 1!:

An eye opening experience that allows me to understand and know better about the current living condition/economy of our communities. This experience makes me feel the need to contribute to society in any way possible – not just in the medical field. Apart from that it helps me to reflect and improve on my social skills and communication skills as I need to communicate with people from all sorts of backgrounds (eg: Kechara staff, an elderly, kids, the administration from the old folks home, etc).

Your feelings & thoughts:

I am very excited yet a bit scared as during the volunteering activities there are no staff from Kechara that accompanied us. Due to that, I need to prepare myself each day for any challenges that may come and maintain good communication with Kechara HQ.

Any difficulties/concerns? What have you done?

My friends and I decided to volunteer under Kechara Soup Kitchen (KSK) for this elective posting. Our first day started off with a briefing given by Vicky, the person-in-charge from KSK. We watched an introductory video which explained the activities carried out by the organization such as food bank, soup kitchen and empowerment program includes sewing and baking class. Then, the PIC brought us to visit the Head Quarter (HQ) and the empowerment office where we witnessed the area where they do the sewing and baking activity.

The next day, we met the PIC again at the HQ and were briefed on the activities which are provision deliveries and our role is to deliver the donations. We were given the opportunity to deliver the donations to a children home and old folks home. To make sure that the entrusted goods are delivered, there is a clear instruction in the WhatsApp group on the steps to deliver the donations and report it to the Manager of the Food Bank, Katie.

3. Points to remember from week 1!

Despite the fact that Kuala Lumpur is a city, there are many poor individuals there that require care. The work that KSK has accomplished has opened our eyes to urban poverty and inspired us to do more as a society to ease it. Others may just have time and energy to offer, but those with greater abilities and fortune can contribute in the form of money. The point is everybody can contribute in any way that they have, and I think it is quite honorable for everyone to work together to aid those who are in need.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

I am excited to do volunteering activities as this is my first time to volunteer under Kechara. I was a bit nervous when we learned that we are doing the activities without the Kechara staff on-site. However, it went easily as the people we met were very kind. As I engage in this activity, it occurs to me that I find joy in even the smallest of tasks that I do to help those in need.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

There were no difficulties during the activity. It went smoothly and heartiest thanks to my friends who were with me the whole journey.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Fun and Interesting

7. Your plan for next week (Week 2)

I anticipate more challenging situations to be faced next week such as going to communities in disadvantaged areas. Hence, I will prepare mentally and physically to face those obstacles. Besides, I would like to learn more about the organization’s other activities.

Animal care : 1st Week of Zoo Volunteering"

Nur Athirah Binti Mohd Azlan
A181072
22/7/2023

2. What have you done?

Last week , I volunteered at Zoo Negara for my elective posting. It was a 8 hour volunteering session with breakfast and lunch breaks in between. I was assigned to the children's world section. My first task was to sweep the hippopotamus cage and i gotta admit, seeing those big hippos up close initially scared me. However, as I got to observed their adorable behaviors, my fear subsided, and I felt more at ease completing the task with the guidance of the zookeeper. Besides that, i also experience preparing food for the animals such as monkeys, rabbits and others with few others volunteers. We need to peel and grate the carrots, bananas and whole lot other type of fruits and vegetables. Next up after the breakfast break was cleaning the guinea pig cage. It was the most challenging yet satisfying task of the day! Why ?? First, I have to say, the smell was overpowering, and second, I need to pick them up with my own hands (without gloves) in order to clean their cage. But then, working with a partner and seeing the task through made me proud of myself. Last but not least, after the lunch break, i was told to clean the goat's cage. Surprisingly, the goat was friendly and well-behaved and it was fun to clean while having a little goat buddy. Replacing the old sawdust with new bedding while the friendly goat curiously accompanied me made it the most memorable experience of the day.

3. Points to remember from week 1 !

Such an incredible and educational journey that taught me about wildlife conservation and the enjoyment of interacting with animals. Truthfully, performing various cleaning duties helped me to appreciate how crucial it is to protect the animals' welfare. Just like us, when our environment is threatened, animals can also become ill in the same way that humans can. This has motivated me to try my best to provide a secure environment for them. Furthermore, spending time with the animals and learning about their cute and charming traits motivated me to show more compassion for other animals.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

As it was my first time volunteering at Zoo Negara, I do feel a bit nervous or unsure about what to expect. However, as I engage in various activities and interact with the animals, I could experience a sense of fulfillment, joy, and satisfaction, knowing that I am contributing to wildlife conservation and the well-being of the animals. Additionally, as I learn more about the animals' personalities and unique behaviors, I might develop a deeper connection and appreciation for them, fostering a sense of empathy and care for other animals beyond the zoo setting.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?

As I was handling the guinea pigs without any gloves on, I was worried about the hygiene issue. However, thanks to the knowledge I owned and the zookeeper constant reminder, I was able to lower my concern by washing my hands according to the WHO handwashing guidelines.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far

Enriching and inspiring

7. Your plan for next week (Week 2)

I wanted to try a different section with more wild animals and probably do a lot more of feeding than cleaning.

Muhamad Asraf Haikal Bin Ramli
A181492
22/7/2023

2. What have you done?
Having actively participated in volunteering activities at Zoo Negara, I had the wonderful opportunity to engage in diverse and enriching experiences, where I contributed my time and efforts towards the conservation and welfare of animals, learning about various species and their habitats, supporting the educational programs aimed at raising awareness about wildlife conservation, and assisting the zoo's dedicated staff in maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for visitors, thus fostering a deep sense of fulfillment and appreciation for the importance of protecting our natural world.

3. Points to remember from week 1!
During my first week of volunteering at Zoo Negara, I vividly recall learning valuable insights on how to work effectively with animals and the essential safety rules to prevent any potential attacks. The zoo staff emphasized the significance of maintaining a respectful distance from the animals, refraining from making sudden movements or loud noises that could startle them, and always following the instructions provided by experienced keepers.

Furthermore, I was taught the proper techniques for cleaning and preparing animal enclosures, particularly in regard to the animal floor. One crucial aspect was the use of sawdust, which plays a pivotal role in providing a comfortable and hygienic living space for the animals. I learned how to spread the sawdust evenly, ensuring that it covered the floor adequately while avoiding any accumulation that could lead to undesirable conditions for the animals.

Overall, the knowledge gained during the first week of volunteering at Zoo Negara not only fostered a deep understanding of animal care and safety protocols but also instilled a sense of responsibility and dedication towards contributing to the well-being of the remarkable creatures entrusted to our care.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
During the volunteering program at Zoo Negara, I experienced profound happiness and a sense of fulfillment as I dedicated myself to helping and learning about the animal enclosures, particularly at the enchanting Children's World, where the delightful parrots, gentle goats, playful ponies, adorable rabbits, and charming guinea pigs captured my heart. However, amidst the joyous moments, I also embraced the fatigue that accompanied the rewarding work, knowing that my efforts were contributing to the well-being of these wonderful creatures and fostering a deeper connection with the natural world.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
Throughout the volunteer program at Zoo Negara, I found myself fortunate not to encounter any significant difficulties, as the zoo keepers were exceptional in guiding and supporting me throughout the entire experience, ensuring that I gained valuable insights and practical knowledge about animal care and conservation efforts. Their expertise and dedication were evident as they patiently mentored and encouraged me, helping me navigate each task and assignment with confidence and enthusiasm, fostering an environment where learning became a seamless and enjoyable journey. With their expert guidance, I was able to contribute effectively to the welfare of the animals and various aspects of zoo operations, instilling in me a profound sense of satisfaction and appreciation for the vital role of zoos in promoting wildlife conservation and education.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Enriching and Rewarding

7.

1. Your name, matric number, date
Name: Keoy Su Zing
Matric number: A180736
Date: 12/6/2023

2. What have you done?
For this elective posting, I decided to work a part-time job at Kedah Hawkers' Association for one month. The position that I applied was to be a secretary in the association. On the first day of employment, my supervisor explained to me some history of this association and also some basic job scopes of the work such as organizing meeting, answering calls, typing documents, managing files, receiving visitors. Besides, she also took me on a short tour of the association. Since my entry time was very close to the association's anniversary dinner which was the most important annual event of the association, thus the week was relatively busy because all of us had to prepare the dinner. On the following days, I had a golden opportunity to follow my supervisor and the dinner-organizing committee to sell the dinner tickets and to find some kind-hearted people for sponsorship. Not only that, I also had to help my supervisor for preparing the banquet guest lists and some required documents.

3. Points to remember from week 1!
Since this is my first week of working, thus I am not very familiar with many operations and working process. I think the biggest inspiration for me in this week is to learn from the others with an open mind and not to be shy about asking questions. I am a novice and I will definitely encounter many problems. When I encounter this situation, I have to humbly ask the supervisor for advice and learn from she. In my opinion, everyone makes mistakes, but the point is to admit your mistakes and correct them.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
Although this week is indeed busy and there are many things to do, however it brings me a very fulfilling feeling. This job is a new challenge for me and it allows me to accumulate more non-medical professional work experience. The real working environment can help me to improve my practical work ability and problem-solving ability.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
The biggest problem I am currently facing is that I am not familiar with the business here, but fortunately I have a very patient supervisor. Whenever I have a problem, I can always ask she for advice. Besides, I actually plan to start my part time job on 17/6/2023 but my supervisor called me to start one week earlier on 12/6/2023 because the association is lacked of manpower to prepare the anniversary dinner. Thus, I tried my best to rearrange my schedule so that I can get into work on the time.

6. 2 words to describe elective posting progress so far
Satisfied and enriched

7.
