In modern engineering, however, aqueduct refers to a system of pipes, ditches, canals, tunnels, and supporting structures used to convey water from its source to its main distribution point. Such systems generally are used to supply cities and agricultural lands with water. Aqueducts have been important particularly for the development of areas with limited direct access to freshwater sources. Historically, aqueducts helped keep drinking water free of human waste and other contamination and thus greatly improved public health in cities with primitive sewerage systems.

What is a dome? A dome is a rounded vault forming the roof of a building or structure, typically with a circular base.
This is an example of one of the Romans greatest achievements, the Pantheon. The pantheon is basically one big dome. So why are domes so important? It's is because the Romes built domes for their monumental building like the pantheon most likely for a government building, and also for the United States of America Capital state building in Washington D.C today. Now you're probably wondering, how did the Romans make these huge domes? The Romans made these big buildings by first creating arches and then formed a roof with arches which were called vaults. The Romans used the principles of the arch to make it into a hemispherical shape which they made/called domes.
* Picture of a dome*

An arch is a curved symmetrical structure spanning an opening and typically supporting the weight of a bridge, roof, or wall above it. Why did the Romans create arches? The Romans used arches to create bigger and larger buildings, just like the coliseums. But why is it that the Romans built the coliseums out of arches, why not regular planks? They built it out of arches because the arches were able to hold more heavier structures like the coliseums. If they had built the coliseums out of planks the whole thing would just break and fall down as they're building it. These arches were made out of a material called concrete. Concrete made was able to bend in all kinds of shapes which made making arches easier for the Romans to build them and it also was a strong material.
*Example of an arch*

The Romans created concrete because the materials used in it made it so that the concrete could mold into pretty much anything the Romans wanted, from little statues to huge coliseums. Concrete revolutionized the way the Romans built most of their buildings, because the concrete was one, easy to work with, two, the material was heavy and good for building big structures successfully and easily, and three it was easy to make and cheap.
*Picture of concrete*

Inn today's society, you can see these in side walks, public buildings, roads, streets highways, theaters ect. The Romans also found ways of improving everyday life like the aqueducts which they used to transfer water to different cities. Now we used the idea of aqueducts to create our own version of it to make water systems and sewer systems. We like the Romans did, used concrete to form different structures and to make roads to make traveling easier. In conclusion, the Romans architecture has revolutionized the way many people build and create structures, roads, buildings and more.
* picture of a highway*

As the textbook, "Medieval to Early Modern Times" mention on page 28, some Roman artists were so good at portraits, it was as though you could what see the subject's personality was like. Republican Rome embraced imperfection in portraiture because, though there were different levels of power each class of society had, everybody had little insecurities, this type of untouched physical representation fostered a sense of community by implying that while there were existing inequalities, that did not change the fact that they were Romans.

Portrait of a Lady from Rome-

The Romans would sometimes have these in their house as a sign or wealth, or public places such as buildings or bath houses had these.
