3 key differences my group discussed between the traditional and alternate ELPAC were that:

During administration of the alternate ELPAC test examiners can use physical objects which means it’s important to use various teaching resources.
Any mode of communication is accepted for the alternate ELPAC including pointing, gestures, verbally, etc.
The traditional ELPAC has more restrictions and doesn’t allow for more flexibility.

I’m struck by the fact students could have the initial ELPAC vs alternative based on their iep date. Do students retake it if they were given the traditional initial and a week later their iep lists accommodations needed?
Alternative testing can promote a more accurate understanding of where a student is at.
What diagnoses qualify as cognitive disabilities? Does this list change? I’m wondering how this definition might impact students given these diagnoses are hard to get, avoided due to stigma, or just misdiagnosed.

1) Alternative - students has to be cognitively impaired and written in the IEP

2) Summative - hands off and you are tied to reading the directions (not guided)

3) Alternative - can provide 1:! support and it can be more specific

Initial ELPAC is more independent with less test administer support
Alternate ELPAC has much more support with the administer going through each question with prompted and scripted responses to student questions
Alternate ELPAC has more options for students to answer questions like pointing to pictures

Sylvia Gonzalez: One of the accommodations for the Alternative ELPAC is that the administrator reads the questions to the students. The students have different options for answering questions based on their abilities.

The first consideration that immediately comes to mind is regulation. No testing, assessments, or any air of school work can happen without regulation. Making sure my students are regulated and in a good space and able to focus will ensure the best possible and most accurate information on where they are language wise so making sure that they are regulated before coming into the testing space or bringing it to them is the first step.

The alternative initial ELPAC involved 1:1 support for student allowing the student the full attention of the Lea.

Unusual also allows visuals and manipulative as well as other adjustments for the students personal education needs
