TransCluster (UCL Centre for Translation Studies)

This is CenTraS's computer lab. It is currently used by MA/MSc students and teaching staff, as well as for one-day professional courses, research events, etc. There are 60 computers with cutting-edge audiovisual translation software and computer-assisted translation tools that are fundamental for translation technology courses. There is an access code that prevents students from other departments to use these computers, since the software we use is not available elsewhere at UCL. The main drawback of teaching MA/MSc courses at the TransCluster is that, given the inner nature of translation studies, students have to be divided into small language-specific groups. Hence, the lab is not always available to teach certain seminars/tutorials/small-group sessions, such as mine. CenTraS's TransCluster is, first and foremost, a working environment, but due to an infelicitous lack of common spaces for CenTraS students/staff, it also acts as a meeting point from time to time. The TransCluster is also well known in professional translation circles, since CenTraS runs an audivisual translation summer school, online courses and one-day professional courses that are quite popular among professional translators/interpreters, and students and alumni alike.

Student's learning and experience is affected by the spread-out nature of our urban campus. Long travel times, moving around in winter, a lack of green space or collegiate outdoor setting, can all impact negatively on students' learning. Yet being located in an urban centre also has its advantages, including allowing for easy movement into the urban fabric (to engage research, employers, or even studying in a coffee shop).
Brent
