Hi , and Welcome to our virtual exhibition ! This is just like the padlet we had set up for Inktober , except it talks of what the Native Americans used to do and some important things in their culture. We talk about Thanks-Giving and try to explain it in a more profound way , we also show you different art works that represent the Native Americans ! We talk about different Native American tribes , like the Navajo, the Cheyenne and the Cherokee , and we try to explain their way of life and see how different it was from ours. There's so much to learn and to explore ! We hope you'll stay and have a look around , and if you don't that's totally fine. We really hope this padlet helps advance your knowledge on the origins of Native Americans , and help you know more about a very popular holiday!

-The students of PARLE, 4e

Native Heritage month is a month where we commemorate the native americans fighting for their culture, and their own lives. The native americans have fought throughout the years for territory that was theirs.

Through dance, family traditions, art, and music, these stories show both the contemporary diversity and long history of Indigenous people across the land we now call the United States.

This tradition actually used to only last a week, and it was called the “American Indian week”, but a lot of presidents decided that, as the month of november was already referring to cultures, they thought to transform it into a month long event.

Native American and Alaska Native Heritage Month has evolved from its beginnings as a week-long celebration in 1986, when President Reagan proclaimed the week of November 23-30, 1986 as "American Indian Week." Every President since 1995 has issued annual proclamations designating the month of November as the time to celebrate the cultures, accomplishments, and contributions of Native Americans and Alaska Natives.

-PARLE 4e

The inuit refer to a large groupe of native tribes but they are all are descendants of the Thule people and have a similar culture. Although most people think that they only live in Greenland, it is false, as a big part of the Inuit tribes live in Alaska and Northern Canada. Another false myth is that the Inuits all lived in igloos, but igloos were just temporary homes for hunters. They are also refered to as "The Eskimo", but this term is rather vulgar and offensive as it means "eaters of raw meat". For hunting sea animals, they used kayaks, and for hunting larger animals or to transport many people or goods, they used bigger boats called the umiaq. They are known to use dog sleds for trips on land, dogs having a significant place in the Inuit's culture. Traditional Inuit clothes and shoes were all made from animal skins and sewn with animal thread and a needle made from bones.

Sarah

The Cherokee are native Indians who compose the US biggest tribe. The name Cherokee comes from a Muskogean word that means "speakers of another language". The Cherokee called themselves the Ani-Yunwiya, meaning "principal people". They are believed to have numbered some 22,500 individuals in 1650, and they controlled approximately 40,000 square miles (100,000 square km) of the Appalachian Mountains in parts of present-day Georgia, eastern Tennessee, and the western parts of what are now North Carolina and South Carolina.
They made a very clever leading system for their village which in two chiefs are involved. One, White, who's leading when times are peaceful, and one, Red, who's leading when war is declared.
Fun Facts about the Cherokee :
-Sequoyah was a famous Cherokee who invented a writing system and alphabet for the Cherokee language.
-Cherokee art included painted baskets, decorated pots, carvings in wood, carved pipes, and beadwork.
-They would sweeten their food with honey and maple sap.
-Today there are three recognized Cherokee tribes: Cherokee Nation, the Eastern Band, and the United Keetoowah Band.
-They enjoyed playing a stickball game called Anejodi which was similar to lacrosse.

Thea
