Over the years, media has shown us that tragic heroes are everywhere. The media is in charge of letting the world know who these tragic heroes are and portrait them in a certain type of way. This is how celebrities exists today, Michael Jackson being one them. ¨The Prince of Pop¨ as the media named him, achieved unimaginable success early in his life; everyone knew he had an unstoppable future as a virtuoso. Unfortunately, the moment he stepped into the spotlight, he was condemned into being criticized by the whole world, meaning they were paying attention at his every move. In addition to this, having such a dark past and experiencing rancorous events during his childhood only gave him a hard time trying to discover who he truly was. He was considered both the most public and the most elusive figure in his industry. Regrettably, Jackson made many poor choices during his career, one of them being the molestation of children. The public’s view on his image changed completely after finding out of this incident and realizing that he had a toxic character. Unluckily, his fame, wealth and power were the cause of his downfall, turning him into a tragic hero, only making the media reveal his tragic flaws and showing his peripeteia.

Hamlet, Michael, the same?

¨The King of Pop¨ was the title the amenable Michael Jackson was known for when he reached fame. Unfortunately his death was an event that really impacted the music industry. His death was first ¨unknown," but later on forensic studies showed that it was a homicide. Taking this into consideration, this can be related to the play Hamlet, specially with the main character, Prince Hamlet. They both share certain traits and handle situations similarly. First of all, they both put on shows for an audience. Just like Michael performed in front of others, Hamlet did too. In the play, Hamlet put on a show for king Claudius, but he had a reason for doing it. Hamlet says in ACT III scene 2 what he is wishing to accomplish with the play, “which I have told thee of my father’s death. I prithee, when thou seest that act afoot, even with the very comment of thy soul observe mine uncle. If his occulted guilt do not itself unkennel in one speech…” (Act 3II 72-76). He is planning on finding out who truly killed his father, and who caused so much damage in his life. Just like Michael they both shared a life filled with sadness. Moreover; Hamlet was accused many times of being mentally unstable, this occurred because of the medleys that used to baffle everyone. Because of this, his uncle Claudius kept on checking his behavior at all times, “madness in great ones 'must not unwatched go,” (ACT 3I 189). Meaning that Hamlet must be under supervision at all times, he believed that it was insanity. Insanity is something that both, Jackson and Hamlet shared; they were no longer seen as the serene persons they once were. As Jackson became more famous, it seemed that he didn’t have happiness in his life, making the media portrait him to the world as a fractious person. Just like Hamlet, he also tried to show his family and the rest of the his spectators that he was still the same person. Although they both kept on pushing themselves just to show people how mistaken they were, incorrigible decisions were made. Their final decisions only demonstrated how their sadness and their problems finally took over, making them commit suicide. They both died of something that the world can’t cure, depression.

Michael Jackson has dominated the whole world as ¨The King of Pop¨, in the music industry. Just like Hamlet, they both had great minds and this is what they were known for. Shakespeare is really forward when it comes to describing his characters in his plays. Specially with Hamlet, there major changes in his attitude throughout the play. His mental stability was now questioned; everyoen wondered if the Hamlet they knew had gone mad. They weren't so sure if they would ever see him again.

Final:
Many people looked up to Michael Jackson, it was said that Michael truly had an unstoppable future as a virtuoso.Unfortunately, the moment he stepped into the spotlight, he was condemned into being criticized by the whole world; they were paying attention at his every move. This is similar to what Prince Hamlet had to go through; he was really admired by the people because of his great mind. Sadly, his father’s death had a bigger impact on him. He knew that he had been murdered by his uncle, Claudius. This is where everything changed for him; he became obsessed with avenging his father’s death. King Claudius was suspicious of what Hamlet was planning to do this is why he said, “madness in great ones 'must not unwatched go,” (ACT 3 I, line 189). This meant that Hamlet had to be under supervision at all times; he believed that Hamlet was insane. This is what Michael Jackson's life was like whenever he was under the spotlight.

How hard is it to live life when you can’t find your true happiness, and when you don’t know exactly who you are. Looking for his true identity was something that Michael struggled with during his entire life. He was never satisfied with the way he looked and tried to use his wealth to change this. He also had a difficult time trying to show his true-self to the world, making it hard for him to keep living. Although Hamlet didn't have any sort of self-image, he constantly doubted to whether keep on living or not. In ACT 3 he stated ‘To die, to sleep—No more—and by a sleep to say we end the heartache and the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to—’tis a consummation. Devoutly to be wished! To die, to sleep.¨ (ACT 3 Scene 1, page 3, lines 61-65.) Shakespeare is really forward when it comes to describing his characters in his plays. For example in this quote, words like “consummation,” “heartache,” and “devoutly” give a tone of desperation and sadness. It demonstrated how Hamlet truly felt about life; he believed that sometimes it would be better to just give up and end his suffering once in for all. Just like Michael, they both went through so much; they had a rough past. Jackson lived a life filled with unhappiness and self-doubt. He wasn't really sure of what was truly worth doing; fame didn’t mean anything if he was living a miserable life.

Lastly, having such a dark past and experiencing rancorous events during his childhood only gave him a hard time throughout his career. Michael Jackson was considered both the most public and the most elusive figure in his industry. Regrettably, Jackson made many poor choices during his career, one of them being the molestation of children. The public’s view on his image changed completely after finding out of this incident and realizing that he had a toxic character. Hamlet went through something like this, he had an obsession with revenge. He went too far with it that at the end he committed a serious crime; he killed Polonius. ‘Ecstasy? My pulse as yours doth temperately keep time and makes as healthful music. It is not madness that I have uttered. Bring me to the test, and I the matter will reword, which madness would gambol from.” (ACT 3, scene 4, page 7, lines 141-145). This is where Hamlet’s mother is convinced that he has gone mad. His obsession is considered his tragic flaw because at the end it’s what caused his demise. For Michael Jackson his fame, wealth and power were the cause of his downfall. The downfall of these two turned them into tragic heroes. For Michael Jackson, this made the media reveal his tragic flaws and showing his peripeteia.
