What were the key points of the “Populate or parish migration policy” in the 20th century?

In the aftermath of World War II, Australia faced challenges in terms of population size, defence capabilities and economic development. Prime Minister Ben Chifley realised that something had to be done urgently.

With that in mind, Chifley created the federal Department of Immigration. Its mission was to run a large-scale immigration programme to increase Australia's population. The slogan "populate or perish" was born, and its importance was clear: Australia had to grow or otherwise risk disappearing.

Between 1945 and 1985, about 4.2 million immigrants arrived in Australia. About 40 per cent of these newcomers came from Britain and Ireland. This number even overtook the number of convicts transported to Australia in the first 80 years after European settlement.

1. After World War II, the United States and its allies created international organisations and agreements to promote world peace and prosperity.

2. After World War II, the Nuremberg and Tokyo trials were held to try German and Japanese leaders for war crimes and genocide.

3. In 1947, Britain left its colony on the Indian subcontinent and divided it into two independent countries: India (with a Hindu majority) and Pakistan (with a Muslim majority).

4. The Vietnam War, which began in the 1950s, in the 1973 Paris Peace Accords. These accords ended direct US military involvement in Vietnam and led to the withdrawal of US troops. More than two million people had died during this protracted war.

5. In 1973, the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) declared an oil embargo. This led to a global oil crisis. The crisis affected the entire world and changed energy politics and economic dynamics.

One issue Australia is facing is experiencing devastating floods and horrible heatwaves which are destroying houses and nature. There have been calls for more ambitious climate plans, yet Australia keeps its position of being one of the major exporters of fossil fuels.

Besides the issue of the environment, the indigenous people living in Australia experience a hard time with disadvantages in education and justice. There are still ongoing debates on how the federal government should act.

Another issue is the Australian housing crisis: for many Australians, it is hard to find a house due to the increasing costs of rental properties and houses for sale.

The economy of Australia has come a long way. Throughout the years there has been a noticeable growth starting from the 19th century. This century is known as the Gold rush era when gold was discovered in the states New South Wales and Victoria. This marked an economic boom which attracted a huge amount of immigrants. Consequently, there was an increase in economic activity and the population. Then came the Post World war boom with the arrival of skilled workers who contributed to industrial growth and urban development. The country also went through a phase of resource boom in the 70s and 80s with the discovery and exploitation of vast mineral resources of which iron ore, coal, and natural gas contributed to economic growth. Lastly, from the early 90s till present, Australia keeps doing well economically, doing trade with great countries like China and other Asian countries as well.

The majority of countries which Australia currently trade with are mostly based in Asia. Among these countries are China, Japan, South Korea, and India. Besides, the USA is also one of Australia’s vital trade partners for both import and export products. As for the Asian trade partners, China stands out as the largest responsible for 27% of the two-way trade. Moreover, the 40 % of the countries goes to the earlier mentioned countries including Singapore and Taiwan. The Australian economy is highly connected with the countries of East and Southeast Asia, which accounts for 64% of its total exports in 2016.
