The Great Barrier Reef boasts the greatest biodiversity of any Aquatic Biome. Over 2,000 kilometers if the home to hundreds of species of coral, fish, birds and mollusks. This is a beautiful area that attracts millions of tourist every year.

Over the course of decades particularly the area of the Abbot Point Site has been used for dumping dredge spoil.

Another major factor in the destruction of the reef is tropical cyclones and coral bleaching mostly caused by warmer waters.

Port development is very controversial currently as this can be very harmful to the reef. Also the port sites have transported nonnative exotic species that do further damage, such as the Crown of Thorns Starfish.
