Japan:

In 1639-1853, Japan created a very strict policy known as the sakoku (closed country). Sakoku was created to control foreign influence, mainly from European traders and missionaries. Under the Tokugawa Shogunate, Christianity was banned and missionaries were either expelled or executed. In 1854 the Treaty of Kanagawa was created which allowed limited trade to the United States. One significant movement in Asia was the Self-Strengthening Movement (1861-1895) in Qing China. The purpose of the movement was to strengthen China through the selective adoption of Western technology. Things they tried to advance were the military, industrial development, education reforms, and diplomatic engagement. The movement failed to prevent China's decline but this failure contributed to further reforms.

The point of the reform was to modernize the state, centralize the power, and prevent the empire's decline. European imperialism or industrial demands affected the economy of the Middle East during this time by European industrial powers needing raw materials, so they demanded it from the Middle East and Asia. They also loaned or borrowed a lot of money from Europe there for they were in a lot of debt.

https://www.studentsofhistory.com/reform-movements

https://www.jstor.org/stable/41858004?seq=2
