The kids are jealous of Margot and they keep her away from the one thing she wants- the sun. The kids berate her and then lock her in a closet. This shows the reader that their jealousy drives them to act in a way that is terrible. Even though the kids feel guilty at the end, the damage from their actions cannot be undone.
