Mahatma Gandhi was a prominent leader in India during the mid-1900s when the land that is today recognized as India was controlled by Britain. Using his non-violence tactics, Gandhi was a main reason why India gained independence on August 15, 1947. Sadly, he was assassinated on January 30th of the following year, but his everlasting impact on India will never be forgotten.

The Rupee is currently the official currency of India. This currency can be found in banknotes of 1, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 rupees, which are each printed in a unique color. Indian currency also comes in the form of coins, called paises. Similar to the American money system, in which 100 cents equals 1 Dollar, 100 paises equals 1 Rupee.

Hinduism (Ganges River, India and Bangladesh): Religion

The majority of India's population is Hindu, which is a religion based around the belief that people are reincarnated into other living things over and over until they complete their dharma, or moral duty. By having good karma, which is a law that emphasizes good deeds, Hindus can get closer to completing their dharma to escape the cycle of reincarnation. Another aspect of Hinduism is taking a pilgrimage to the Ganges River, which is a holy Hindu site where people will bathe in the water (fun fact: The Ganges River is one of the most polluted rivers in the world).

After India gained it's independence, the land that was no longer owned by Britain was split up into India, Pakistan, and what is now Bangladesh. When this happened, the "official" religion of India was Hinduism, and that of Pakistan was Islam. For this reason, Muslims who lived in India wanted to migrate to Pakistan, and Hindus who lived in Pakistan wanted to migrate to India. This was one of the largest human migrations and history, and unfortunately, many casualties were sustained due to conflicts between the two groups.
